How do I connect my Galaxy Note 3 to my Windows 10 PC?

[Android Central Question]

I have attached my Galaxy Note 3 phone to my Windows 10 (x64) PC using a USB cable. But although it is charging the phone I can't see any new icon on the PC in File Explorer.

What should the connection to Note 3 look like in Windows Explorer?

Background
I desperate to connect the phone so that I can recover all my WhatApp data.

Welcome to Android Central! After connecting via USB, swipe down the notification panel -- do you see a USB icon there? If so, tap that notification and make sure MTP (or File Transfer) is selected. The phone should then show up in Windows Explorer.
