How to exclude Messenger from the new Doze function for Nexus 5

My LG Nexus 5 updated to the new Marshmallow and since then whenever I dont touch my phone for like 10-15 min and I stop receiving notifications from Messenger. Once I unlock my phone I receive all the notifications from texts that were sent like 20 min ago. Is this because of the new Doze function and how do I get it to work like it used to before? I want to receive my notifications (sound and little green light) the moment someone writes me a text.

Thanks in advance

Welcome.

Try Settings, Apps, 3-dots top right, Check Or Change App Settings, which includes notifications.

settings, apps, tool symbol, battery optimization, hangouts, don't optimize. I had the same issue, not getting notifications even though I read that hangouts notifications should have still come through regardless. Seems to work correct now that I don't optimize it.

Hows everybodys battery with 6.0? Did you see a big improvement especially with SOT?

Fascinating. I will definitely have to remember that trick. I was wondering how this "doze" stuff would affect programs that are SUPPOSED to stay awake. It is not uncommon under Android for me to tell Play to update several programs and the damn thing hangs mid-update because the screen went into standby... ridiculous! And that was BEFORE this doze stuff. No denying doze works to increase standby times though; I just wonder the cost.
