I currently use a really cheap Motorola C170 throw-away cellphone. It is connected to the pay-for-minutes-as-you-go Tracfone Wireless service. I live in the hills where cellular service is spotty at best, so subscribing to a regular cellular is not worth it to me. Tracfone is way more practical for the light use.
Over a year ago, my parents retired their old Motorola Tracfone and bought a new(er) LG L39C Android Tracfone smartphone from the QVC shopping TV channel, and transferred their minutes to the LG. It's an old model, but it's also a major step up from those cheap Motorola throw-away phones. QVC sold it with chargers and a cover, so it's not bad. The LG's camera is really yesteryear, though.
I've been thinking about stepping up to an Android Tracfone, but I'm not sure I want to go the QVC route. I'd like to find something that will work on the Tracfone pay-for-minutes setup, and offer all the smartphone amenities, including a modern camera. Tracfone has a "bring your own phone" page on their web-site for those who buy their phones separately: tracfonewireless.com/byop/
But how can I find a decent, modern smartphone that will work without paying an arm and a leg? How do I shop for one? It's like wading into an ocean...
MY COMPUTER: Apple iMac (2012 Core i5 model); MacOS 10.9
CELLULAR SERVICES MOST COMMONLY AVAILABLE: Verizon Wireless, 3G
CELLULAR RELIABILITY IN AREA: Fair, but easy to find lots of dead spots
