Android Central Question

My Samsung Galaxy Avant syncs email but does not display. "cannot safely connect to server" appears after any attempted changes in settings. I'm a Verizon customer so I use AOL and MacMail on my home computer where email works perfectly. Mail just doesn't get through to phone. Happened suddenly for no apparent reason.

Welcome to Android Central! I assume you're using the stock Email app, and added the AOL and MacMail accounts to that app, correct? Does this happen on both wi-fi and mobile data?

Did you already try removing those email accounts from the Email app, then adding them back again?

I havent because internet searches I have done about this problem seems to indicate that others have tried that without any success. Since I can send emails but not receive I don't want to risk making it worse unless I absolutely have to. Its kind of a last resort right now.

Interestingly, this happened to me the same day as you!

Delete the account and re-create it. It will be a "manual configuration." On my Samsung Note 4 it's the Verizon.net icon...and... I can't emphasize enough that when you recreate the account, you need to make sure that your user name is the same as your account name (which is your full email address - Jdoe@verizon.net). In otherwords - full email address in two places. (On mine these fields display one right under the other.)

I found the fix Sunday from another web forum: change incoming to incoming.verizon.net from pop.verizon.net.
So far it has worked.

Thanks for your reply.

On my Samsung Galaxy S5, email has always been problematical to set up. When on the Telstra business POP server, I gave up on the S5 as Telstra could not sort it either. To be honest, I think it is a piddle poor email app built in to the S5.

In my case I wanted to link to a new IMAP account (Hostpapa).
Seems:-
1. Both "email address" and "username" need to be the full email address.
2. SSL needs to be "accept all certificates" in incoming and outgoing.
3. Servers are named "mail.(domain name)".
4. Require sign in for outgoing settings.

It then works for me.
