How do I get my back button working correctly?

Back button not working correctly...

I am running android 4.4.2 and last week my when i started hitting the back button to get out of an app, it would open up another app rather than going home. if i have other apps that had been running, it will take me to the previous app that was open. if i have cleared out all apps, it will randomly pick another app and open it. i have done two factory resets and same problem still persists. Anyone else experience this and if so, able to fix it?

If you press Home, does it take abnormally long for the homescreen to come up? If so, it sounds like the Launcher is abnormally closing. Does a reboot usually fix the issue, at least temporarily?

when i press home, it is pretty snappy. the resets havent corrected the problem either. i am running nova launcher prime on it, maybe i should try the stock launcher and see if it has the same problem.
