Unlocking carrier restrictions

Hi all! I am spending two months in Japan and unfortunately I broke my Sony XPeria M2. Luckily I managed to save the SIM card . Sadly, most of the SIM lock free phones sold there are not compatible with my SIM card. If I were to buy a new phone in Japan, is there anyway I can unlock the carrier restriction so the phone can support my SIM card? It is a french SIM card, provided by Free. Thank you!

I would think if you paid full price for the phone over there it would be carrier unlocked.
