How do I install apps from unknowns sources with 8.0/Oreo?

I'm testing a new app that is in development. How do I install apk files/apps from unknowns sources on my Note 8? I used to be able to do this in Android 7 but they took this out in Android 8.

Just try to install the app and it should ask you if you want to give permission to download from unknown source.

I've done both of your suggestions in when I try to install the app I just get a 'parsing error'

You don't need developer mode.

Go to Settings -> Apps -> 3 Dots -> Special Access -> Install Unknown Apps.
Then give a selected app the ability to install apps from unknown sources.
