How do I keep apps from automatically opening?

I have way too many apps that automatically open. I want the app, but only when I want it. I close them using app killer, but they keep reopening. How do I control this?

Are they system oriented things? These will always come back to my knowledge but if you're talking about apps you downloaded they could be reopening due to them trying to perform a function such as syncing. Or like Gmail where the push service stays alive behind the scenes so it can wait for an email to come in.

What apps are you having issues with?
