How to recover contacts and data

My galaxy s3 recently stopped working after i installed the new update. Is there any way i could recover the data and contacts?

In what way has the update stopped it from working? If it was just an OTA update from your carrier and you did't do a factory reset, the data should still be on that phone. Recovery depends on how you were setup before. If you stored your contacts in the phone, rather than on the SIM card or up in Google contacts, then you need a way into the phone. Running a USB cord between the phone and a computer might let you can manage the phone like an external drive and copy the info onto your computer. Ditto for pictures, most other data.
