My picture started appearing in my stock sms threads. I don't want it there!

I had been messing around in google+ and added the same picture as my profile photo in google+ but instantly removed it. Now that picture is showing up in my messenger and Gmail messages. Not happy and can't figure out how to stop this.

My google+ profile photo is the stock blue circle.
FYI...hangouts is not my messaging app. I am using the stock sms app

In the Google+ app, tap the overflow menu top right, under account settings tap your Gmail address, contacts. Do you have the setting "Keep contacts up to date" turned on? If so, try turning it off.

If its not that, it's probably pulling the photo from the "Me" contact at the top of the People app. Try removing the photo from there.

By the way, you do know that your photo is not actually being sent with the message, right? The Messaging app (and Gmail) is just taking the photo from the contact in your People app and using that to show you who sent which message in a message thread.
