First I am new to rooting. I have done some research and have found some websites that say the 2.2 can be rooted and some say it cannot. First questions is can the Evo 2.2 be rooted?

I have read that there are a couple forms of rooting.

I would be interested in the simplest way to root my phone so I can use the wireless Hotspot even if I have to start the app every time I power cycle the phone.

Also will I lose all my apps and settings?

Don't use unrevoked3. It effed my phone. I suggest reading the stickies about rooting. Read read read! Can't stress that enough.

Go to unrevoked because they have the simplest rooting method.

Go here for the video and text instructions:

No, you won't lose your data.

Please do not go to Unrevoked, it is a bad process and many members on these forums(including dex) have tried every way to you guys that UNREVOKED IS NOT SAFE! Please do it the proper way, its not difficult, just read.

Thanks Dex again, i appreciate you trying to help people out but somehow they do not listen...at all...

Ps. Guys Can we stop these rooting threads? There is already multiple stickies and the proper root method has been established...

I feel like there is about 50 of the same root threads...its kinda cluttering up the forums and causing confusion lol..

agreed! id wager theres more than 50 :P lol

there should be a mod where your required to read the faq/guide/step by step like 10 times before allowed to post "how do i root" lmao

I've been reading through these threads over and over again in preparation for rooting, and I too feel there's almost too much information. I mean, in fredelement's sticky about rooting, he mentions Unrevoked as a possible method, and then you get into threads like this one where people adamantly warn people never to use Unrevoked.

It gets very confusing and intimidating. And I, for one, am scared to ask questions because I know I'm going to hear "this has been discussed countless times; do a search and read. " Which is true... I know the answers are all in here, but there's plenty of little nuggets scattered in so many places that it's hard to digest it all. To their credit, most of the people lurking here seem very patient, helpful, and forgiving.

Well that's a guide so I wanted to give everyone every option.

If you have hboot 2.02 or higher then you have to at least use Unrevoked-Forever.

If you have earlier versions you can get temp root access, flash a different system version, then install the EVO's engineering software which has an unlocked hboot.

So it really depends, what version software does your phone have now and do you want to use the more manual method (first thread I suggest for 2.02+ hboots), the automated manual method (universal auto root) or the closed source method (unrevoked3.3x).
