How do I set the sms tone from messaging app?

Usually, you can tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner within the messaging app to change the sms tone. But when I do that, the option simply isn't there. I do have the option to change the default notification sound from "sound settings", but I only want to change the sms tone. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Note: I have the Motorola Edge 5G UW (2021). I came here because I didn't see it listed under Motorola phones. This is the only Edge thread on here.

Go to Settings>Apps, select Messages, then Notifications. Tap the words Incoming Messages (i.e., don't tap the toggle switch), then tap Sound, and choose a new notification tone there.

Thanks B. Diddy, that worked. Surprised that such a simple task has so many steps on a brand new phone. Thanks again.

Glad that worked! It may seem a bit complex at first, but the other way of looking at it is that there's a centralized place in the system settings where you can adjust tones for any of your apps (instead of going into each app and changing things there). The problem with app developers is that many of them don't follow any standard guidelines, so their menus can be all over the place.

My Android 14 on my Samsung Galaxy does not have an "Incoming Messages" choice. All it has is:
Alerts: allow sound and vibration or silent buttons
Notification types: 3 enable/disable choices - Lock screen, Badges, and Pop-up
Configure in Messages

This 3rd choice "Configure in Messages" only has a "Preview new messages" on/off switch.
Going into the Message app and clicking on the top right (3 dots) and choosing Settings gives me no "incoming Messages" choice. The "Notifications" choice just takes me to the same 3 things (same as above) and "More Settings" does not have anything to do with sound.
I used to have it but now the Android 14 SMS text messaging app is foobar'ed and I can't set a unique sound (ringtone) to differentiate a real text message from all other general messages. Is there another way I can change it?

Welcome to Android Central! Go to Settings>Apps (in the system settings, not the Messages app's own settings), select Messages, then Notifications, then Notification Categories. If you selected Google Messages, you should see Incoming Messages there -- tap those words (not the toggle switch) to get to the next screen that lets you choose the Sound. If you selected Samsung Messages, after you tap Notification Categories, tap New Messages, and choose the Sound there.

I'm basing this on my Galaxy A32 5G that's still on Android 13/One UI 5.1. There's a chance the menus were changed for Android 14, but it's unlikely.

That is my problem. I have a Galaxy A14 5G phone with Android 14 and One UI 6.1. This version does not have an "Incoming Messages" anywhere that I can find which is frustrating since every site says that is what I need to be doing to change the SMS ringtone. Without an incoming messages choice I can't change the ringtone so I hear the same sound as for all general messages (the global default ringtone for any message). Since I get many messages about app updates, my anti-virus, weather alerts, etc. every day it would be nice to have a unique/different ringtone for an SMS text message so I can hear that it is a text message that I need to read instead of just a general message. In the "App Info" it shows version 15.1.20.33 and if that is flawed or corrupted in some way is there an easy way to just re-install the SMS text app?

Let's see if someone else with One UI 6.1 can chime in. @mustang7757 or @Laura Knotek , can you check your notification settings for the Messages app and see if you can locate what we're talking about?
The version that they are using is from the Samsung Messages app. I don't use it. I use Google Messages.

Ok one thing here that's important that dor some reason Samsung turns off by default is notifications categories it won't allow you see those menu until turned on , so first thing first go settings>notifications>advanced>toggle on notifications categories then long press the message app >tap info>notifications>notifications categories>if you tap each menu there it will take you to other menus
