how do I stop my texts from showing up on my lock screen?

What device? What OS?

On a Nexus device running Marshmallow, Settings > Sound & notification > When device is locked, choose the option you want.

On a Motorola device, I believe this is adjusted using the Active Display options in Settings (they may have moved it).
