How do I stop my phone from connecting to wifi automatically?

I would like to only connect to wifi when I want. It picks up wifi everywhere and it runs my battery down. In settings I can turn it off and on but it still turns on automatically .

Please specify your phone and OS so I could give you proper solution... There should be option in setting to turn this thing off

Go to settings, Wi-Fi, Advanced, turn off the auto connect feature.
