How do I stop my pixel from automatically installing monthly security/software updates?

I've never owned a phone that automatically installs monthly os software/security updates without asking me before. I'd really like to be able to manually install them when I choose. How do I shut the automatic updates off? Is going into developer options the only way.
On my Moto x pure it always asked before installing anything.

It's a setting in Developer options.

If you don't have Developer options enabled, you go to Settings/System/About phone, and tap on the Build number of your phone (approx 10 times) until you get the "your a Developer" message. Then go to System/Advanced to get to the Developer options.

Thanks :-) So it looks like it still downloads the updates but just doesn't install them until you give it permission. Interesting. Does the original pixel work the same?

I don't know about that. My Pixel 2 XL is the first Google phone that I've used.
