Native SMS App randomly opens -- dozens of times.

I thought I could live with it when it started happening this morning, but after using my phone for a bit, I cannot.

My sms/text messaging app is randomly opening while I'm doing something in another app. I can't figure out a rhyme or reason but it keeps happening and it's happening with more frequency.

For instance, I was taking a document-pics in Evernote. Every time I took a photo, the SMS app would open up.

I was scrolling thru Twitter; the SMS app would open up.

I was checking my calendar; the SMS app would open up.

It opens to the message thread at the top of the queue; pressing the 'back' button brings me back to the app I had been working in.

I use the native Samsung Note 3 text messaging app, because that's the one that 'talks to' my Samsung watch.

But it's really frustrating me b/c this is only the latest irritation I have. (It doesn't play a sound when new messages come in, and the new message doesnt appear in the drop down/pull down 'alert' panel. The only way I know I have missed a new message is if I see the icon).

Does anyone know if there's a messaging App I can use with my samsung watch? I'd happily ditch this one.

Or, can someone help me stop the Messaging App from opening All.The.Time.?

I've restarted the phone several times; doesn't seem to change anything.

I have a Samsung Note 3, ATT, my "About Device" screen tells me my software is "up to date".

Model Number is Samsung SM N900A
Android version 4.4.2

I personally use hangouts. It shows new messages on the watch when they come in, and to reply I use flesky messenger

Hey thanks, I missed notifications for these replies. I will look into them....I'm scared to start in recovery mode though.

The random opening has stopped but I'm still frustrated by the lack of notifications h sound our in the notification tray) of new messages.

I'll give the suggestions/hangouts a try.

I remember I disabled hangouts for some other glitchy reason. Sigh
