turn Nexus 7 into a cell phone?

I used my existing cell phone number (from Metro PCS) and added it to Google Voice. I installed the Hangouts Dialer on my Nexus 7. I can make phone calls to anyone, but the recipient can't see that it's me calling - even though I added my cell number to Google Voice. It shows up as "unknown."

How can I remedy this and get people to see it's me calling?

Check your Google Voice settings to make sure there's nothing blocking your number from being seeing on the other end. If there isn't, then I'm a bit stumped as well, and will keep an eye out for a fix.

I second this. There is a setting in google voice that allows you to have your number shown to people you call and I believe this is off by default. Check all the settings thoroughly.

What number do they dial? Your cellphone?

By default hangouts rings when someone calls your google voice #. I am pretty sure you can also set it up in the google voice settings to have your regular cell # fowarded to your google voice # so when someone calls your regular # it fowards to your google voice # and rings hangouts.

Thank you. When I try to set up a new Google #, it asks for a "forwarding number". Why do they ask that? I don't want Hangouts interfering with my cell phone or land line.

I also have a PhonePower soft-phone in my N7 that I use when I'm away from home. It's not free but it works. Why does Google offer free phone? Where is the catch?

It doesn't interfere with anything. They asked for mine a few years ago when I got the gv #. I assume they offer a free phone to get your # and sell it to solicitors?
