How do I turn off sound notifications for certain things?

I get a lot of emails every day and my atrix has this sound notification go off every time I receive an email. As you can imagine, after a while it just gets annoying ... is there any way to fine tune this?

I just want my phone to ring when I get calls and text messages but not when I get emails or facebook alerts...

In the Gmail app there are settings for each account. You can disable notifications entirely or set it to just notify on the first new email.

if you're using gmail , from inside the application...

*menu
*more
*settings
*uncheck email notification

if you're not using gmail then I'm not sure how to do this but this may give you some info to start with

You can also look into something like AudioManager to change the volume for phone/text/email etc

ah ... i see that now! I couldn't find "settings" under gmail, it was under "more"; so i thought maybe i could do this by going to system settings ... *slaps forehead*
