how do I turn off those "amber alert" notifications?

sorry - I'm sure that this is a very basic question, but I had never even seen an android device until a few days ago, much less tried to use one.

Welcome to the forums! You can maybe search for this in your "Settings" or "Advanced Settings" app/section; but I am unsure if Amber Alerts is something you can turn off.

Try this. Open the settings, tap on the magnifying glass top right, type 'amber', select 'show amber alerts' and see what options can be unchecked in there.
