How do I unlock my Galaxy S3?

I went into settings, then lock screen to create a pin. The screen gave me a keypad with numbers and symbols. I entered a four number pin followed by a symbol. I confirmed this pin, then turned off the screen (I didn't turn off the phone). I turned it back on and the screen showed a keypad with numbers and the alphabet like the old phone keypad with no option to enter a symbol. I am unable to unlock my phone and removing the battery did not solve the issue. Please help!!

Bring the phone to your carrier and they can unlock it for you. (For various reasons, we don't give out that information here.)

A bit strange you can enter a symbol to set it, but not to unlock it.
