The Google play services has stopped and now I get a pop up that says the same thing every few minutes

I also have this problem. I have a SM-G900T on marshmallow and the problem occurs when I swipe left using the New York Post app. It happens to 50-75% of the time when I swipe. Rebooting doesn't solve the problem

Only with the NY Post app, or with other apps as well? If it's only with the Post, try Clearing Cache/Data for the app in the App Manaqer.

When I originally posted I thought it was only the NY Post app. However it also occurs on the Daily Mail app. In addition I also have a very long delay in backing out of the NY Post app.
I did clear the cache and uninstalled - reinstalled the NY Post app and it has not cured the problem.

For the news apps, try Safe Mode. If no go, email the apps' developers about the trouble, then Clear Cache, Clear Data, Force Stop and Uninstall.

No Joy in Safe Mode. I decided to remove the app and use the Chrome Web-browser to view the site
