How do you insure a phone through Amazon?

So I was watching the new video that Erica put out, and she mentioned that she got her phone from Amazon as well. Just curious, but how do you insure a phone like that when its not through a carrier?

You could always go to squaretrade.com and get insurance through them as long as you've had the device less than 30 days.

Don't know if it is correct, because I've not gotten an unlocked phone before, but when I had it turned on at sprint they asked of I wanted insurance. Seemed odd since it wasn't their phone but who knows.
