How do you set a "Primary" contact phone number?

When I try to dial directly from Contacts, my phone often brings up a fax or other related number. How can I change the "primary" number? Also, any experience with Contacts Optimizer to help clean up contacts? I have contacts coming in from Outlook (business), Gmail (personal), WhatsApp, etc. Thanks.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? In Google's Contacts app on a Pixel, I can select the contact, tap the menu button at the upper right, and Set Defaults.

In just the standard contacts. I have a a contact with multiple numbers. I hold on the number i want as default. Then an option comes up with set as default. Sorry can't help with the optimizing part though.
