Chrome apparently knows some of my Android devices already and seems to allow me to install apps to them externally, but I'd like to know more about how it works before trying this feature.

Thanks!

Are you referring to Chrome on a desktop browser, logged in to the Play Store with the same account as on your phone? That just triggers the Play Store to install the app on the device. It doesn't do any differently than if you were to access the Play Store directly on the device, except for not using the device to trigger it...

Right. If you go to the Play Store website on any browser and log into your Google account, then you can select an app and tap the Install button there. It will then ask you which device you'd like to install it to. After selecting the device, that device will start installing the app within the next minute or so, assuming it's connected to the web.
