How does security patches work?

So I am curious being somewhat, but not totally, new to Android I am curious how, and what, security patches work and are.

They are just small, insignificant updates that update the level of security on the device in ways that don't influence your usage but let you be assured that you have the latest security update.

Sometimes actual update stuff and bug fixes, etc., are included too. But usually it is just the security update.
