How does the Timmyme app work?

Just bought a S7 and want to use the Timmyme app for Tim Hortons, does the app use the scan the bar code or the NFC to pay? Reading the app seems like it uses scan. But unsure.

There's nothing in the Permissions list that mentions controlling NFC, so it most likely just uses the camera to scan the bar code.
