How durable is the s9+

They're about as durable as a raw egg. Drop it and it WILL break. Only twice have I dropped my Galaxy phones since they moved to all glass designs and on both occasions they shattered. First was the S7 edge that slid off my car passenger seat onto a rubber floor mat when I braked quite hard. The screen shattered on the front and even the camera glass on the back shattered too. The second was only a few months ago when I bent down and my Note 8 slid out my pocket from about 2'up. The screen spiderwebbed instantly and the side frame bent and that was with a Spigen Rugged Armor case on. I love their phones but like I said they're as fragile/durable as an egg so protect it

The only time I've had a phone get damaged after removing a case was the Pixel XL 2 screen which got damaged when I removed the Seidio Surface case from it. Other than that, I've never had any problems removing cases. As for putting cases on the S9, I have found the admittedly expensive Samsung OEM cases to be really good, feel great in the hand, and not take away from the quality feel. I have two of them, the Silicone Samsung cover and the S-View cover.

What I got out of the CNET drop test video was that I need to have a case on my S9. Or my iPhone X. They're both glass phones, both need cases to protect the glass. Although, in the CNET S9 drop test the aluminum frame around the outside was also vulnerable to scrapes and dents. Not so much for the outside frame on the iPhone X, that's stainless steel.

Can someone who claims the glass is thicker on the S9 then the S8 provide the link where you got that information?

From the review I read it was marginally better than the S8+. I found a case for 18.00 on Amazon that came with a tempered glass screen protector. It is a Zizo Bolt Case. I was skeptical about it when I bought it but my normal Seidio case was not out yet. When I ran the reviews on the fake review website it passed with an A. It has been tested at 12' for drop protection as well. I have been really happy with it so far. It fits the phone well and it does not add much bulk to the phone either. The screen protector is a little on the thick side but I have had no issues with touch. The belt clip seems cheap though. I may order another to have a spare, but it seems to be holding fine so far.

The S9+ has stronger aluminum and supposedly more durable glass, so not the same as the S8.

The aluminum used appears to be a very minor improvement. Best I could find I'd that the s8 used a 6013 aluminum while the s9 uses 7003. Can't tell what temper they used for each, but aiming the T6 for both, the elastic modulus goes from 69 GPa to 70 GPa. An article on Sammobile indicates a 20 percent improvement in reducing the transfer of shock to the glass so my assumptions on the temper could be wrong unless they are accounting for any changes in the geometry of the frame as well. The overall strength based on the temper actually goes to the 6013 aluminum, but as bending failures weren't really a problem with the s8, they probably weren't designing the s9 to be more bend resistant. While I don't doubt there is an improvement, I'd probably consider it to be very minor.

I have a feeling the majority use at least a case, if not a case and sp. I think the phones are as durable as the general competition but I'lL stick with using a case and sp because, for some strange reason, blemishes on my phones bother me. 🤤

Personally I find that cases offer inexpensive insurance against breaking your phone. I've been using a Samsung Galaxy ever since the S2 and always put them in a case from day one with no regrets whatsoever.

Respectfully find it ironic that some find glass covered devices subjective in regards to if they break. Glass is structurally one of the most objective materials in existence. It breaks relatively easy when dropped. Gravity is glass's arch enemy. Well, more specifically kinetic energy.

I think bulletproof glass would disagree :P
BPG scratches easily and has to be thick with broad surface for kinetic energy absorption. We would have heavy, one square foot sized phones that would scratch very easily, but no cracks when dropped :) ;)

True but your statement was generalized about glass categorically.

"Glass is structurally one of the most objective materials in existence. It breaks relatively easy when dropped. Gravity is glass's arch enemy. Well, more specifically kinetic energy."

Just busting your balls though

True dat. Point being, glass covered phones are not durable for drops, in any stretch of imagination.
