How many years do you think the Note 8 will
* last?
* continue to get software updates?
* future proof?

I think were at a point hardware wise,
With processor and 6 gigs of ram..
I would think the Note 8 would have some longevity to it. Kinda like how older I phones still get updates.

Wonder everyones thoughts on this.

I don't think we're at *a point* I think we are in the infancy of snowballing, AI needs nuclear hardware.
future proof ? Well Nokia 3320 is still a winner

There are plenty of people still running with the Note 4 that are happy with it. I ran into someone yesterday with a Note 3. They hadn’t upgraded because it was still doing everything they needed and it ran smoothly for them.

The Note 8 will get Oreo and probably one more big update. Then probably security updates for 2-3 years at least. Nobody knows any of this for sure but those are my estimates based on my experience.

The notes usually last at least 3 years for most I have friends still using the note 3.

Project Treble support comes with phones with Oreo 8.x pre-installed. Linux krtnal 4.4+.
Dedicated AI processor. Then the software can begin to use new hardware capability.
And yes, more regular updates as well as security from the ground up.
The extra memory and memory management on the N8 shines and helps with DeX, multiple apps, already.

I'm banking on at least 2 years (I did the Verizon payments trade in promo in Sept.), hopefully 3 or more. I don't see why this phone won't still be a good device in 2-3 years.

IMO you should expect a solid 3 years, 4 on the outside. You're almost certain to get two OS upgrades in that time that will help.

I look at other phones to get an idea of what you should get in terms of if the phone can still be useable.

You look at iPhones, I know people using iPhone 5s still and must be painfully slow but functional and that was released in 2013. I think one major reason is that for a phone that came out with iOS 7 apple has kept providing updates and currently still gets iOS 11. That's 4 years later.

I still have my 6s and actually a 6 I keep for spares and or for other duties like running or mountain biking and other activities with a smaller phone and can say, even though people jab at updates and how buggy they can be, for most part the updates kept the phone relevent and running smoothly and if I had to, I'm sure I'd be ok for at least another year with those phones.

OS updates and changes for Android haven't been as dramatic from year to year like back when I got my first Android with KitKat, and someone running Nougat may not miss the handful of differences in Oreo, but there are also changes that developers may be pushed to make in future releases and they are constantly updating their apps and if you don't have the latest OS that uses them then that's where you end up with issues and you constantly hear of people saying like S7E is janky after a year or Sammys just get worse over time.

I'm hoping that won't be the case. Again I have a Note 8 so I'm in it for the next few years. But I'm personally hoping for a solid 2-3 years.

Samsung flagships get 2 years worth of major OS updates (so thats 2 updates), abd up to 3 years of security updates. Barring any big security hole dicovered, Samsung flagships are usable for up to 4 years or more.

Future proof?

To be honest, I don’t know that I want updates after 2 years. iPhones definitely seem to take a hit when you update a phone more than a couple years old. I’m perfectly fine with 2-3 years of updates. I used a Note 4 a couple weeks ago and it still ran great. I don’t know that would be the case if it was running Nougat. I don’t keep phones for longer than that anyway.

For me? 6 months. ;) BUT I change phones as the seasons change! lol

3 years max (after seeing what happened to the Note 4's hardware failure). They have the Enterprise edition which offers updates for a longer period of time, and I think they promise 2 years of production for the same phone. I would give it 2-3 years before hardware starts failing, my guess. Anyone with an old Samsung phone they used daily still working after 3 years? Me personally I think it's a strategy to not make phones that lasts forever otherwise there would be no more profit.

My old S3 is still working. Galaxy Fit (2011) is still working. Power button is shattered, but as long as I don't turn it off and use an onscreen lock widget and the home button to wake it, it's good. I just basically charge it up every 2 days and let it sit no sim in my drawer. Galaxy Tab P6200 (2011) is still alive and my mom plays games on it. Still on the original battery. I'm still using my Tab 4 from 2014 as my tablet.

My son is still using my Note 3 as his daily driver. I used it for 2 years before giving it to him. It's now 4+ years old and still going strong. All he has had to do is buy a replacement battery.
