How good is the multi-tasking?

First off I am a PRE user thinking of making the switch to the EVO 4g. I have had the PRE since launch day and LOVE the OS and UI, but its just time to upgrade and webos needs something new.

Multi-tasking?
how good is it? I am used to whatever you open, stays open and running no matter what. not some half ass pause and its in the same spot when you come back.

example:
if i am in sprint nav, getting turn by turn directions, can i go to say email or the i-net and still have the turn by turn directions being shouted out to me?

Add the task os app and you will feel right at home. Hold down the search button, icons of all running apps come up, click on an icon to switch apps, flick the icon up to kill it

And to answer ur question about Nav, yes along with 23 other apps if u wish.

but to my previous question..

do the apps stay running in the backgroud? or is it just a pause and like a recently used list?

anyway someone could give me a screen of this tasks app?

from what i am reading it seems similar to the iphone. only certain things run in the background most just get paused.

will the sprint nav shout out turn by turn directions while i am in another app?

So i am guessing this OS really doesn't multi-task..

It multi-tasks, but it's difficult to show to a Pre user via a screen shot. You can't minimize like WebOS card styles that will show multiple apps running on the screen at once.

However, it's not like the iPhone where for some apps it memorizes the state, closes the app, and when you relaunch the app, it resumes that "frozen" state.

With this phone, the apps continue to execute in the background if they're not on screen, more so than WebOS in fact. WebOS pauses quite a few apps when they are minimized.

There are videos that try to demonstrate the multi-tasking on the net. If you can't find one convincing, post back and I'll see what I can do.

thank you that was an explanation.. however my example.. does something like that work? spring nav turn by turn open and then i click on say email.. do i still hear my directions?

Hi all. I am also a Pre owners looking to possibly switch to the EVO. I have one question: Can you listen to music (either via the micro SD card or streaming from web) and browse the internet like the Pre can?

Yes, you would.

And, to be clear, some apps do pause in the background, but generally it's by design. Take YouTube for example. There's not much point in running a video that you can't see, so it pauses. But if you go back to it, you can hit play and immediately pick up right where you left off.

But take an IM app like Meebo. You can switch out of it, but it will continue to run and you will get your messages real time with notifications.

So it's true multitasking, as much as WebOS. It's not as fluid as WebOS so without using it personally, it may look smoke and mirrors like iPhone OS.

I am a PRE user who made the switch and while the multi-tasking is not quite like the pre it is close enough that I am not missing the cards system as much as I thought I might. Honestly, I multi-task faster in the EVO because the PRE was just so darn SLOW. Make the switch... You will be glad you did. I know I am.

Haven't had to test the navigation and interrupting it but I will today just to be able to tell you something or at least know for myself.

Coming from the Pre, I preferred the multitasking on the Pre. The Pre's swipe gestures made it more convenient to move around and the cards definitely gave you a true visual sense of what apps are running.

That being said, Android's multitasking seems to still be very good. It just doesn't have the two great things with WebOS stated above. But once you get used to navigating around by holding the Home button, it becomes second nature. Things that would make sense to have running in the background, keep running (such as music, nav, downloading apps...).

I am so on the fence with switching from my Pre to the EVO. I can't tell you how many Pre vs. EVO articles I have read. I went to Sprint yesterday to play around with a EVO and I am still on the fence.

same here man.. i love the webos and the pre.. but i just feel like its time to let it go and hope they come back. i know i'll buy this phone and 2weeks later palm will announce their next phone.

We wouldn't be having this conversation if my Pre wouldn't have started acting up last week. Release day Pre now crashing about twice a day after never crashing after the 1 year.

I have a release day pre as well.. and its just starting to freeze up and become mega slow more and more. i'm getting tired of it and this phone just seems worlds better.
