How good will EVO3D camera be?

I am certainly not offended by anyone or anything said. I speak like this all the time, even in my classes you would hear me saying every word in the book. If foul language offends you, I would stay very very far away from me.

Any updates on the EVO3D release date?

This thread is about the camera's, not the release date.

You guys run a pretty tight ship around here. Just don't ask people to wear armbands with our belief symbol stitched on. Some people don't take kindly to that.

Peace all,

the cameras on this beast is really the only thing that concern me---will you still be able to use the camera in a horizontal position or will you always have to use it in a landscape mode for the 3d effect or will holding it in a horizontal position only utilize one of the cameras...confused

I think to capture 3d images you need to hold it horizontally, because each camera capture a slightly different angle of the image to be then displayed at each eye. Its the stereoscopic effect.

I believe I read somewhere that for standard 2d snapshots only one of the lenses is used and you get a 5MP image. That is more than enough resolution for computer screen display or typical print sizes.

A major issue with picture quality for camera phones has to do with sensor size because size matters - signal to noise ratio - and you can't just keep stuffing in more pixels at a given size without making the adverse effects even worse. Most camera phones have a 1/6" sensor which has only 17% the area of the sensor used by compact digital cameras and a minuscule 1/2 of 1% the area of the sensor in a full frame DSLR.

Since the Evo 3D is making a bid deal of its camera one hopes they're using a larger sensor, better lens (extremely important) and better process for converting raw image data...but in the absence of any published hardware specs I'm aware of who knows?

I've got a 3D television for display so the geek part of me must have this phone to see what it'll do, but I can't say I'm more than cautiously optimistic. HTC has seriously raised the bar for camera phone expectations and given the hardware limitations it's going to be tough.

Hands down my favorite feature in my epic.

Are you sure the 3d pics will be so much lower in resolution? Doesn't each camera need its own sensor?

The lower resolution for 3D isn't necessarily a problem. Remember, you're looking at this on a screen and a 3D display resolution of 720p only needs approximately 1MP for each half of the 3D image for 2MP total, well within the capability of the 5MP sensor (if that's what they're doing). The 1080p display resolution for the non-3D video also only needs 2MP per frame.

Both 720p and 1080p are considered hi-def and few people can tell the difference. With that said there are several ways to divide and display a 3D signal that do have a bearing on quality and I don't think we have all the answers yet.
