How I dramatically improved my battery life

All I did was turn off auto-brightness and set it at 25% or 50% (I go back and forth sometimes). This doubled or tripled my battery life. Why that made such a huge difference is beyond me, but it definitely did.

I also did this as one of my steps. I have mine at about 20% and find it very acceptable for my needs at all times.
the few times I have set it to 100% to show someone full brightness, it actually is TOO brite for me (now)! LOL

Yea I saw your post and the only thing I really had out of your list was auto brightness... After switching it off I can't believe how much it improved my battery life, even at 50% brightness it still lasts 2-3x longer than with auto brightness on. Also for whatever reason it consumes substantially less battery while idle.

Who knows. I'm just glad it lasts more than 5-6 hours now.

I figure it's because autobright needs a sensor to run (is it the ffc?) and the change of screen brightness eats battery life. I turned that off immediately and I think the screen is at the lowest brightness.

Unless you need Push Email and Facebook Notifications, I turn off the Mobile Data, it turns on so fast anyways, its not a big deal to turn on and off.

Dang, my buddy sent me an email last night just to rub in the fact that his iPhone was at 48hrs with no charge... and still had 62% remaining. That was kind of a kick in the anus.

I'm LOVING my charge, but I really have to push it to get more than 16hrs in 4G, or more than 24hrs in 3G. I don't think that I could get 48hrs if I left my screen off all day.

Unless your buddy's iphone was sleeping for 48 hours, he may have been full of s#*t. I have had an iphone 4 and it was great on battery life, but never had I used it for 48 hours, and experienced 60%+ battery life. Dont let it get you down.

What I am hoping for is a rom for this phone similar to the Apex roms for the Droid X. They were stripped down and optimized MOTO roms that were great on performance and battery life.

You should have replied while your phone was up for 48 hours. I downloaded and surfed the web at 10+Mbs. all the while using a manly phone.

I did give a response similar to this... although ill be frankly honest... deformation general use, I don't think the 4g is a big issue... I run on 3g frequently and see absolutely no difference when completing the tasks that I typically perform.

I did get it out of him this morning though.... he's using the phone with data off all day!

no one seems to answer me when I ask this question so I'll try again. I'm on an og droid and I am getting abysmal 3G in suburban NY where 4G is apparently astonishing. I get <300 kB/s down and <50 kB/s up consistently. I never had problems with my 3G until less than 2 months ago. Now I can't even send picture messages (MMS). Do you think it is my phone or the service? Basically, if I got the X2 would I start seeing better 3G service, or should I jump ship to the charge? Ideally, of course, Bionic would be best, 4G GS2 would be better. Thanks for any suggestions/insight!

That's a difficult quesiton to answer for you... which is likely why you aren't getting any responses.

Those speeds seem INCREDIBLY slow to me, based on what speeds I'm getting with my Charge on 3G (0.96mb down, 0.88mb up). I really can't say if that is just your phone having an issue, we're using a different speed test (I'm using speedtest.net app) or if your location is causing the issue... All I can tell you is that my Charge is way faster, and those speeds would really tick me off.

As for comparing against other devices, I think the only way to get a true answer is to walk into a VZW and run the speed test .net app on each of them so you can compare results with the phones in the same location.

As for the Bionic or GS2 being best, I guess that's all speculation since you can't get either of those phones on VZW right now. I will tell you this, I'm pulling 16mbps download and ~4mbps upload out of my Charge right now :)

Just a heads up to guys that aren't aware of it, Verizon now has the Samsung extended life battery available (2600ma).

same app being used. My brother gets better service with the og droid at my house and his house in queens, so I think it may partially be my phone. But yes, the 3G speeds are intolerable. Like I said I can't even send picture messages and barely load youtube videos, definitely not while moving either. Everywhere I go I get terrible speeds anyway. I guess I will have to drop by VZW, especially when Charge has a price drop soon enough :)

At this point I am just afraid of the future proofing. If I get the Charge soon I am locking in until 2/2013. I cannot purchase a new phone since I am a broke graduate medical pa student. So I am pretty much stuck with what I get. I will use this phone for lots of emails, texts, tapatalk forum app, little facebook, bit of browsing, plenty of GPS in the car, and most importantly Epocrates, Medscape, Skyspace, Diagnosaurus, and other medical apps constantly. I need this phone to work consistently fast (both internet and the phone itself) and good battery life. This is my primary concern before jumping ship. That is why I am thinking of the X2 because it is seemingly future proof and the marginally larger (in size) extended battery is cheap and well proven in its efficacy. However, I do not want to be locked in to these terrible 3G speeds. If it is a fluke and the new phone (X2 or w/e) gets good 3G (~1mb up/down and higher) then that would be sufficient, id say. Otherwise 4G is certainly fast enough, but is the hardware future proof? 512mb RAM and older gen. single core? Can you picture this hardware keeping up by the end of 2012ish? That is my question..

I will try to help....

Not sure why you had a sudden drop in 3G speeds. I would do a factory reset and wipe the phone after backin up, to clear out any software cause. If that did not fix you 3G speed, then take it to VZW and see if its a hardware issue. They may give you a factory refurb.

Re: DX2, unless the 3G problem you encountered is due to a tower, network or phone location problem, you should see better speeds.

Re; Charge(or any other VZW 4G phone), you will have to evaluate that for yourself. You are exploring a whole new world of variables there. It does seem that speed is very important to you, so may be worth looking into, but beware: battery life, learning a new phone, 4G where you live...new set of questions.

Hope this helps.
PS: if phone is insured, if it gets lost, stolen or crushed, you can start fresh.

It's hard to see anything keeping up with the latest and greatest through the end of 2012, honestly. However, keeping up with the latest and greatest is something good for tech junkies and gamers, but not something the average user is likely to care about. I certainly expect the Charge to last you through 2012 if you're a "normal" user, however. I don't know specifically about medical apps, but I wouldn't imagine they're anywhere near as taxing as 3d games, and the Hummingbird seems to handle most of those with aplomb.

If you're interested in future-proofing, the Charge would make more sense than the DX2, IMHO. I would think LTE is gonna keep you happy longer than dual-core stuck on 3g would. And if you have more funds available and decide you want to upgrade early, or simply get a new device without losing your unlimited data, you can get any other LTE device that may come out in the future off-contract. Yes, I know it would be expensive, but you can do it and switch it to your plan with no problems, but not if you just have 3g. Also, early impressions of the DX2 seem to suggest that its still got a lot of kinks to work out. People complain of heat issues, random freezing, and generally lackluster performance. This could explain why the original Bionic was cancelled. But while LTE is in its infancy as well, I don't think I'd want to be stuck with a DX2 for 2 years, unless a coming update managed to fix all those issues. It would have to be buttery smooth and blazing fast to make up for not having LTE.

That said, the GS2 will likely be the most powerful 3g device on VZW for some time once it launches, and be a much better choice than the X2. Of course we won't know for sure till it comes out, and there's still no word on when the VZW version drops. Obviously, the almighty Bionic will be the one to wait for, with dual-core and LTE, you should be quite future proof. However, every month you wait means it'll be that much longer for an upgrade, and its starting to look like the Bionic may miss out on unlimited data. I for one am getting tired of waiting on it.

In summary, considering VZW's current offerings, I think the Charge is by far the best choice if you won't be upgrading for 2 years. There are better phones on the horizon, but there are always better phones on the horizon. The choice is yours, but I don't think you'd be disappointed with the Charge. IMHO, its either that or keep waiting, rather than getting a DX2 at this time.

Well said. The mentioned reasons are exactly why I stopped waiting for the GS2 and Bionic and went with the Charge. After seeing the screen on the X2 (and also seeing this comparison:A Closer Look at the DROIDX2 and its qHD Display, PenTile at its Finest - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog), I'm more than happy with my purchase.

Cruiser and gcims, I appreciate your honesty and no bull-crap, straight-shooting demeanor. I think I will get the charge once it drops in price, hopefully soon. Thanks!

With light use I got over 48 hours on My Charge, but not with 62% remaining. Are iPhones currently able to use 4GLTE? If not, that would also account for better battery life.

I would call that no use... not light use. With data turned off during that 48 hours it defeats the purpose of even having the phone...
