How is the Nexus 7 tablet for reading ebooks?

I think that people underestimate how great the screen is. It's very clear and crisp. I think it's great for any task and that definitely includes ebooks!

I'd say it's as good as any other _tablet_. You will have to bump up the screen brightness vs. indoors and that will eat battery. That being said, if you will be doing a lot of reading outdoors and reading is your main use case, you would be better off with a dedicated e-ink device.

The Nexus 7 is fine for reading ebooks. There are several apps that are good for reading ePubs (I use Moon+). The Kindle app is merely OK, but it's not exactly feature-rich. Some people will say that eInk readers are better on the eyes than LCD screens but you will have to decide for yourself, because people have different experiences. I have no problem with either. I have a Kindle Keyboard, a Kobo Glo, an iPad, and a Nexus 7. All of them are satisfactory (but different).

I do a LOT of reading outdoors in the summer. We have a lake dock, and there's nothing I like better than relaxing on the dock with a good book. I have hung on to my Kindle Touch, thinking I wouldn't be able to read the N7 in the bright sun. Surprisingly, I can! As long as I leave the screen on auto brightness, I can read just fine. I use the Kindle app on my N7. The newest version is learning my "reading speed" so it can let me know about how many minutes more it will be until I reach the end of the current chapter.

My poor Kindle Touch is very neglected these days....

I read on my Nexus 7 all the time. Between the Kindle app, a few books I have on the Nook and Kobo apps, and magazines on Zinio, my reading needs are covered.

I have the Photoshop Touch app on my Nexus 7, which is a pretty complete image editor. I was surprised how many features it actually has. I have a couple of other image editors for simple edits as well. I don't so a lot of heavy edits on the tablet, but I can do enough while on the road.

My Kindle is sorely neglected these days. When indoors I ratchet the brightness of the N7 all the way down and crank it when outdoors. It`s my preferred eBook reader, hands down. Great screen, social media alerts, preferred communications platform.

I love reading with my Nexus 7. Both B&N and Amazon render very well. I went up from a book Tablet.

One of the reasons I just grabbed a 32GB Nexus 7 was for book reading. The size is really great for that. ...as is the sharp screen.

Nexuscillin. The cure for iOS.

I love e-ink and consider it far superior to reading on a standard tablet screen but honestly my Kindle collects a lot of dust these days. I really only want one device if I can and that means a lot of reading gets done on my N7, which does a great job regardless.

Some people might accept no substitute but for me the N7 is good enough that I don't mind giving up the readability of the Kindle for the expanded functions of a traditional tablet.

New 32g Nexus 7: What is the procedure for down loading a viewing ebooks off from Free ebooks - Project Gutenberg web site. I tried the down load epub .. Nexus 7 will not open file? tks .. rich

Epub is the right format but you need an ereader app. I recommend aldiko. You can also upload the epubs to google play from your computer and then they will show up in play books.

Pretty interesting thread. I am planning to buy this table for my father who is an avid book reader. I read somewhere that N7 supports only google purchased epubs so does it mean that I will not be able to read epubs purchased from other vendors ??

kindle reader, works great. i've been reading ebooks since the palm pilot days! and, white on black (on my iPhone as well), and love it. i read a LOT, and the N7 is great for this... (am VERY happy with this tablet, coming from the Apple world...)

not sure what you're asking...i use the kindle reader on the N7, works great. amazon is great for finding ebooks...

Sorry if I am not being clear. My query is around format in particular. Kindle app as I know is specifically only for .mobi format. I am curious about .epub format

You can read any ePub from any vendor (as far as I know) on the Nexus 7 with the appropriate app. This includes B&N, Kobo and even mobi files from Amazon. There are several nice apps for non-DRM epubs that you can use that are far more customizable than anything you can get from B&N, etc.

I read regularly, in fact exclusively, on my N7 and haven't had any issues.

The Nexus 7 will give you access to epubs using apps such as Aldiko and Nook.

One additional benefit for me is the Overdrive Media app. My local library uses Overdrive to manage its ebooks, so I can check out and read library books on my Nexus 7.
