Welcome to Android Central! There are lots of variables, including how you typically treat the battery. Regular deep discharges (i.e., letting it drain to almost zero before charging up again) reduces the overall lifespan of the battery. Using it in extreme temperatures can also impact the overall health of the battery. On top of that, batteries can be defective and fail suddenly. I'd say that the average battery will start to noticeably show degradation after about 2-3 years. But sudden failure is more likely due to a defect.
