How long will you wait for 2.2?

I just barely got my phone not that long ago. Seemed fast at first, but I get lock more than I'd like, but it seems to be due to 2.1 than anything else, as I'm an Advanced Task Killer Spammer.

When my birthday rolls around a little after a month from now, I will jump straight to a 2.3 custom rom if Froyo isn't out.

What about you guys? What is/was the maximum amount of time you're willing to wait. If you've loaded up Ginderbread tell us what you think.

Advanced task killer probably causes more problems than it prevents.

I jumped to a custom ROM (2.2), and like it. I use designgears' cognition 2.2B9.1.3 - it's not the latest and greatest, but it is stable, and after I applied OCLF, Touchdown runs smoothly.

Note that Samsung Canada pulled their Froyo update (see AndroidCentral) and that the Nexus Gingerbread also doesn't seem ready yet (same source, different article).

My advice is to back your current phone up before you do anything, that way you've always got the option to go back. Note that the ODIN-one-click (JF6) at XDA isn't a stock ROM, so don't rely on that to save you.

See this post (mine) for some advice given to another forum member:

Hope this helps,

Will not jump to the new OS unless ATT releases it. Actually very happy with the phone as it is and after my two years are up I will be ready for what new tech is out there - better screen, faster chip, etc.

Not worth the risk to me to brick a phone.

Perception 8. Flashed it 2 weeks ago and it is blazing fast! As far as bricking the phone I have yet to hear about someone actually totally bricking there phone.

2 years until I can get a new phone. I am always trying new ROM's and I don't worry about it bricking because I haven't done it yet. Knowing the process is easy to recover from.

I'm done waiting. I won't load another ROM and void my warranty, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for Samsung. I'll keep the phone as is, and if we get an update, great, but I'm not counting on it. This will be the last Samsung product I own.

I'm so angry and frustrated right now with both AT&T and samsung. if I don't get an update by Jan, in flashing my Captivate typo froyo and never looking back at anything stock again.

I thought the hold up was the carriers on the update. But I think Samsung has been really slow in the release of 2.2. Samsung not AT&T has been the problem all along. Don't you think one of the carriers would have tried to be the first to have their device on 2.2 to sale through the holidays.

Those that have rooted and upgraded to a new ROM, is there a way to go back if you ever have to return the phone (since rooting voids the warranty)?

I'll wait till i get it or until they come out with a new Galaxy line,,, really out of all the phones i have played with Fascinate is my favorite by far 2.2 or not

Because I now have ZERO faith that this phone will ever get an update, I will probably root the phone over the holidays when I have some time.

I know there is some good information out there, so I will have to do some research before I attempt it.

I'm guessing I have to back-up my apps and any files somewhere and since I only have a Linux machine at home, I think it may be a little out of the norm.

Having basically zero experience with Linux (aside from my old Asus EEEpc), I can't help you out much there. However, Gingerbread should be ported over to the Captivate soon ([PORT] Nexus S GB Port to Captivate (UPDATE: Cyanogen and Supercurio combine forces!) - xda-developers).

That link to XDA should help you out if you back out one level and look at the Captivate Development section. You can search the threads for using Linux to backup everything. That being said, if you are stock right now, all you need to do is download OCLF from the Market - the first option is to root your phone. From there, you need to download ROM Manager and update Clockwork Mod so you can backup your current ROM. There is an option in ROM Manager to do that. From there, to get any of the ROMs out that are 2.2-based (if you decide not to wait until there are 2.3 ROMs), look at the ROMs at XDA and decide what you want - there is a myriad of choices. The most popular is Cognition, but the other devs there do good work too. I personally like MikeyMike's Assonance (horrible name) as it seems to be the most stable one that I have used. If you connect via Wi-Fi, you can directly download the ROM from your phone. You install it from ClockworkMod by booting into recovery (you need to read how to do this - normally the OP from the ROM thread has good steps to follow - Assonance is very detailed). It will wipe your internal card, but your external card will be unaffected (go ahead and remove it first). As always, read, read, read and then read some more. You can recover from a bad flash if you make a mistake, but there has been several people that have not been able to recover because they did not follow directions.

I am with you there know1....I was thinking the exact samething. There is no "clear" date set for froyo nor if gingerbread for the captivate. I have so many cool and wonderful things this phone does once its rooted. Its all about choosing the right ROM.

i got tired of waiting and AT&T not knowing anything about android. I jumped ship and am very happy with my droid x.

2.2 out of the box and just got an update from moto

got more support for the phone in 24 hours than samsung and AT&T have provided for the cappy in 6 months

I waited approximately 24 hours before going with a custom Froyo. Being a former iPhone 3G owner, I'm used to taking things into my own hands. ;)

Before you change the ROM, back up the original data. If you root with the one-click root program, there is also an option to un-root.

Also, there is a one-click install for the original Captivate ROM.

Could you please share that app name? I am wanting to try other ROMs but have been held back concerned about being able to get it back to original state.

Thank you

I waited from July when I bought the phone until Christmas Day. I rooted and flashed with Cognition. No regrets 24 hours later. It's like a whole new - better - phone.

Osuarez (and Nophix)

A word of warning, there is no way to get back to the original of the phone, unless you back it up yourself first (e.g. with Rom Manager).

The "one click ODIN" (with JF6 ROM built in) will not restore you to factory-fresh, it is not eligible for the ATT JH7 OTA update.

I'm not trying to be rude, just trying to ensure that you're (both) proceeding with good information.

Hope this helps,

AoN
