How long will you wait for 2.2?

I got tired and frustrated of waiting for att, so I spent xmas night flashing to cognition (2.2). My only regret is for not doing this weeks ago and foolishly giving att too much time to get their crap together.

you know that now that you flashed, Att will release an offical build. Then we will get a Cog Rom based on the official build so you will have to re flash again :)

Thanks for the heads up!

I am getting so closer to doing this but like someone else said they will probably release the update right after I flash the phone with my luck.

2.2 isn't going to be released by AT&T......

....until you've finally found a ROM you like, scared yourself silly by getting the phone to a state you think is bricked, reflashed to ODIN pseudo stock three times, gotten all the apps you like (and forgot to TiBu) installed and setup, your contacts working properly, and all your screens looking just the way you like them.

....then about 30 seconds after your DO install the AT&T version of 2.2, Samsung US will pull it for an undiscovered SD corruption bug :)

I have made my opinion known many times on this (some of you may have seen it) but here goes again.

Samsung will not release a 2.2 update for its Galaxy S line until either Galaxy Tab sales start to taper off, or they reach 30 days past December 25th (to limit returns). The reason being is the US is likely the largest market currently for the Tab(in terms of unit sales). They want to sell as many as they can before they get the black eye of releasing 2.2 and it doesn't fix the broken GPS.

Why else would Canada get the 2.2 update first when in some cases they got the phones later than the US? Yes I know Rodgers (the last Canada company to get Captivate) still hasn't gotten Froyo either.

Samsung wants to delay that shock as long as possible, because it will mean bad press, angry potential customers giving bad lip service about their flagship product. It has been said by some of the people working on the custom roms that when the GPS is accessed at the hardware level, it just occasionally flakes out, no matter what they try. Samsung doesn't want to risk millions invested in Tab marketing to show you the truth, that the GPS in Captivate while functional in near ideal conditions, is otherwise not going to be fixable. The longer they can stave off the negative publicity, the longer they can continue to sell Tabs to unsuspecting consumers. Right now the people complaining are a quiet grumble, but once everyone gets 2.2 and sees that it doesn't fix the issue it may well become quite an uproar. Though the longer you live with it, quite frankly, the less of an issue it will be for you because not many can stay that irritated about a defect for long.

Quick informal statistics google page count for;
samsung galaxy s gps problem
780000 pages

iphone 4 antenna problem
789000 pages

Get an idea of the extent of the problem? I know some of you have no GPS issues but I assure you a lot do. The only reason we aren't getting properly treated is we aren't being recognized because Samsung isn't as much the media darling that Apple is. Of course we will get the same grade of fix the iphone did, a band aid, that may help a few with a GPS issue but for most it will be a matter of Samsung saying, "Oh well, we tried!"

So buckle up and wait, 2.2 will come, but not in September, November, or December like Samsung reps have told everyone, but one day if you wish upon a star.......

Then my captivate will be a real phone?

LoL j/k I love my captivate.

HA HA! So true. Well since the new year is closing fast I would say don't expect to see Froyo until either Q1... Q2... or Q3 of 2011 :p Seems like more and more users are just roming to Froyo. Maybe we will get lucky and see Ginger... HAHAHAHA April fools right? ;)

Someone needs to set me straight here. I have been reading alot on this forum, and trying not to ask too many stupid questions. At first I kept hoping for AT&T to release the 2.2 update because from everything I read it is/was supposed to turn my phone into a whole new animal. I have played with the htc incredible from verizon, two of my friends just got them. They are running 2.2 and I really cant see a lot of difference. One of them was complaining because my phone has swype and theirs does not. I am still running 2.1. I did notice that when AT&T DID update my phone with update1, I lost my "pc internet" aka tethering tab, gained a better quick office app, and my phone would freeze up alot more. Thats about it. Both phones still have all the crapware you cant get rid of. Both of these phones have a 1 g processor, and they both seem to run about the same.

Question 1: What is it that the "official" update is going to have, that is currently not available with loading the 2.2 cognition or something similar? I am under the impression that if or when they do send a 2.2 update, it will still have all the bloatware on it and it will not run as good as say just rooting the device , applying cognito, and also being able to remove un wanted apps.

Question 2: After all the reading I have done, I am convinced that no matter what update I finally recieve from AT&T, my cappy will never be what it COULD be unless I take matters into my own hands and root it. Am I wrong? Is it worth the wait? You have to consider that my own experience with their provided update was more of a "downdate" in my opinion.

I am just trying to figure out why alot of current captivate owners on this forum seem very disgruntled with at&t and samsung, yet I have found everything here I need to update and customize it myself. I am about to root my phone and never look back, so if anyone knows something I dont, for goodness sake somebody PLEASE STOP ME! ;)

VinnieCaleb-

A1 - probably nothing

A2 - you're not wrong. The risk is that you damage the SW structure of the phone in the process (rare with ROMS, common if people try to delete ATT stuff). Sometimes there's a problem with the custom ROM.

For me, going the custom route was great. I'd advise doing a lot of reading before you do. Back up your own phone first, too.

Agreed. Backup, Backup, Backup! Make sure you get yourself a download mode JIG before you venture into ROM land. Made that mistake and had a bad flash. Made my own JIG but it took 40 tries. I recommend this guy for JIG's norcal einstein. Very pro and he includes instructions along with a disc that has drivers and ODIN. Make sure you read the forums. I recommend DesignGears roms. You have Cognintion, which is Captivate based, and Perception, which is I9000 base. Both have their pros and cons. Go Cog if you want pure stability with a few tweeks for performance and freedom. Perception is just wicked fast but it does have a few bugs here and there. Either way these roms will be so much better than the official release, plus you can always go back to stock if you need to.
