Got my Galaxy Nexus on Dec 16 and rooted the next day. Having root allowed me to restore the apps from my old phone along with all the data. Plus, I use Ad Free to block ads on web pages.

Wow. Does this really improve the experience that much?

If you told me rooting and flashing would give my 25% more battery life and close to 100% stability I would not hesitate.

Installing a custom rom and kernel CAN help improve battery life and all of them I would say have 100% stability. There is an app called setcpu which lets you undervolt and can drastically improve batt life. The developers of these roms are absolute geniuses and they can transform your experience with the phone dramatically.

When you get into flashing stuff, it becomes like an addiction. I am on a wonderfully stable rom called Wookie Gonna Getcha (catchy name eh) by one of the top developers named Adrynalyne.
Its really fine, yet I am itching to try some of the other roms out there. And there are ALOT. If you look in the rooting and roms section here on AC, there are quite a few with my affliction of being a flashaholic. Flashing kernels is the same thing...they are mostly great but with so many choices its hard not to try them all.

A phone can perform perfectly fine stock for sure...but with rooting you open a whole world of goodness.

Not rooting here yet. Maybe next year. Just enjoying stock for now.

Being an IT guy myself, I have not been into rooting... That plus I dont know, nor do I feel comfortable with Linux well enough to play on my Personal/Business phone. That being said, I would love to know more about it...

Has anyone posted any "How to" videos to root the GNex...? ... dont get me wrong, I'm a player but I just cant afford to fumble the ball with my personal/business phone...

I'm also am unlocked but not rooted. I was rooted and had some roms and they were all very good, but I then when back to stock and unrooted to make sure I could if I needed to. Good to do once to get the feel. I will not root until the new 4.0.3 comes out. I'm old fashioned and I like oat updates. I like it all to be official. But I think that it says something about this phone and ics that Android improved so much that rooting is not as important as it is on a moto or HTC phone. I had a Droid 3 and I threw a stock roms on it and themed to look like ics and now I have that with this phone so I have what I want. I will do it again but not now.

Check out you tube. That's where I learned how to do it for this phone.

In case you missed it, there is a sticky under the VZW Gnex forum about Rooting, ROMs etc. A very simple how-to with pics. No Linux skills needed.

Im in a similar boat. I would not mind playing with the phone and customizing but I rely on it for business and uptime ks key.

If anyone is considering rooting or knows they will eventually, I highly recommend you unlock your device now. In order to root, you have to unlock your phone, and unlocking the phone will wipe it entirely -- including internal storage. If you wait long to unlock your phone, you'll likely have more data to back up. Unlocking your phone now means you will likely have less data to lose or back up later.

Remember that you don't have to unlock and root at the same time. You can unlock now and root later on down the road.

I was going to root, but then I found that hotspot app and I don't really need it any more. It was going to be nice having adblock, but I can live without it. Everything I need, this phone has out of the box, unlike the iPhone. :)

I unlocked the bootloader and rooted right away. I have not tried a custom ROM yet, but I will. I have flashed the new radios and use lots of root required apps that make the GN even more amazing! I had a Droid X before this, but I never rooted. I see now that was a mistake. Live N learn!

I rooted my phone about a week after buying it. Mainly did it for the custom ROM's to run 4.0.3 and other beneficial tweaks, also so I could install adblock. Rooting and the ROM I installed were by far the best things I have done for this phone. The only reason I would unroot and lock would be for warranty problems if any arise. Plus, the instructions on this forum make rooting very easy to do and the selection of custom ROM's is pretty good over on rootzwiki, especially considering the phone hasn't been out very long.

No rooting for me. I have no reason to. Only reason I was going to root was for Google Wallet and Tethering, but I now have both without root. I'm enjoying the Google experience -- no need to make things complicated with the hassle of troubeshooting things when they go wrong Like I usually have done.

Not rooted yet just waiting on cyanogenmod 9 official G-Nex support. Then rooting right away.

Rooted but no plans to ROM yet, stock is fine for now. I am new to Android (came from webOS) and have no experience with installing ROMs. I mostly rooted for Titanium Backup and I wanted to get an unlocked bootloader early to avoid data loss later. I rooted on day 3. I am enjoying Adfree and I know Lightflow is accessing root but I don't know what functionality that adds to it.
