How many microphones

Microphone only works in speakerphone mode. Regular phone mode it doesn't work. Tried safe mode same thing. No worky!
Is there more than one possible fix?

Have you made sure the primary mic (at the bottom of the phone) is completely clear of debris? Use a can of compressed air to blow it out.

Do you recall any fluids splashing onto the bottom speaker grille?

Call Google to ask for a warranty replacement. This is a hardware defect that plagued quite a few Pixel 3/XL users.

The secondary mic (which is used for noise-cancelling while on a regular call, speakerphone, and stereo audio recording) is at the top of the phone (on the top right edge).

There are quite a few threads here about this very issue (and some articles around the web) dealing specifically with Pixel 3 and calling (the other end can't hear anything). I have no experience with Pixel 1. But if that is the case, it looks like this is a persistent issue with Google.

As well as pixel 1 users, they are just now paying out on the class action lawsuit :O
