How many OS updates can fit on a 64GB Nexus 6?

Everyone's usage is different, but people do generally fall into one of two types.

First is the type who, once they have enough storage for the OS, regularly used apps, and perhaps sufficient media/games to provide for a couple of days consumption, don't normally fill the rest of it just because the space is there. The extra room going to a larger capacity model above the one that does suit their needs is seen as, and would be, purely a luxury, not a necessity.

Second is the sort who, after having enough storage for the OS, regularly used apps, and perhaps sufficient media/games to provide for a couple of days consumption, will throw on media/games they might like to listen/view/play at some point, and will migrate towards the largest available version out of concern the 32GB would not be enough. The reality is, though, that for most of them, going to the larger capacity will only provide a bigger closet that they will be as likely to fill and find themselves out of room.

Now I don't want it to appear I'm knocking the latter - I tend to be of that type myself. But recognizing that about myself, I opted for the 32GB, knowing I could manage with its storage, because I could actually lay hands on one much more easily and sooner than on the 64GB model.

I suspect nobody who buys a 64GB model over the 32GB will regret it - at only $50 for the upgrade and offering more than twice the available storage, it's not a bad deal at all for the convenience it provides. But by the same token, I suspect that many who, like me, purchased the 32GB simply based on the elusiveness of the 64GB, are not feeling as limited by it as we might have initially feared.

I agree for the most part. But there are certainly more than two types of usage cases. Another one, for example, would be someone who has plenty of space leftover after OS, apps, and media/games consumption but then takes on a new career/hobby that changes their usage in either direction.

I don't think either model is a bad choice. For my own personal preferences, I went with 64 GB for the extra closet space because I maxed out the 32 GB on my Moto X in less than a year without even trying. But without going into details, I would have to assume that my usage is much higher than the average person. But that's also why it's my personal suggestion for anyone to just spend the extra $50 (a small percentage of the overall device price) to double the storage. Gone are the days where we can say "whoops, I'm running low. Let me jump on Amazon and get a new micro-SD".

I agree with both of you, really. Obviously, the 32 GB variant seems more readily available when in stock; knowing my usage case, I would more than likely be ok with 32 GB, but I like the comfort that 64 GB affords me. Usage cases do change. What with being a student, I could one day decide to download textbook chapters to the phone; I could also decide to try my hand at gaming. Who knows? It's always good to have that safety net.

The value received for $50, against the base price of $649, is certainly a lot better than that received for the extra $50 on the Nexus 5's $349 base. If you can actually get the 64GB, it's worthwhile for most people, and, should you decide to sell the phone down the road, the phone will hold some of that additional investment in resale value.

If I ever get to a point where the 32GB is tight for me, I'll probably just offload the several movies I have on it to a Meenova (since it's always on my keychain and not inconvenient to plug in to watch a movie via USB OTG).

That's true, good point; and I keep going back and forth, honestly. Sales tax here in NYC is 8.875%, so that's an additional $51-62 on top of the price of that variant I choose. Obviously, I'd want to protect my investment with a maximum protection case, and a tempered glass screen protector, which would probably set me back another $100. So it comes down to protecting my investment in the 32 GB, versus being "greedy", so to speak, with the 64 GB.

Considering how you describe your usage I think a 32gb would suit u fine.

These really shouldn't run you that much. I've used a couple of TG protectors on mine that fit very well and do a great job, from as little as $9, though you can easily spend $40-50 on one if you want. As to cases, depending on just how 'butterfingered' you are you can still get very protective cases for < $20.

Not that that makes your decision any easier :P

Lol, thanks nonetheless. I guess I'm not too "butterfingered", as you put it, lol. The Diztronic case that I've seen on Amazon seems to have good reviews, so that might work; and you're right, looking now, I see some TG on there that might be good as well. We shall see. ;)

It's a nice case overall.. They've sent me 3 (2 replacements) the camera hole cut out is massive and shows a lot of the actual device compared to other cases I've tried.... It's not very precision cut around the camera hole.... but outside of that I really liked it... I use the Spigen Neo Hybrid for now...

32GB is a TON of space.... I mean... I have the 32 model and I have about 10G free at the moment, but in that used space has 7G's worth of nandroid backups and another 2G or so Titanium Backup backups... But I fuss around with flashing custom ROMs and kernels and such. I SHOULD have got the 64 and given myself a ton of headroom, but I was impatient and didn't want to wait around. :)

If I store those backups off the phone, even with the crap I have, I'd have 22G or so free. Unless I start schleping around uncompressed 1080P+ movies, I'll be fine.

FYI.... I've heard a TON of complaints about tempered glass protectors and the N6. Motorola went and beveled the edges to make it feel all nicey-nice when you slide your finger off the edge, but its been a royal PITA for tempered glass. They have to be cut a fair bit smaller than the actual screen.. if they are too large, they'll bubble out along the edge. Too small and you end up with a weird border and a multi-tiered edge.

Granted, if you slap it in a case, that mitigates the border a bit. But I wanted to pass the info along in any case.

Actually, yeah, I have seen people complain in reviews about poor fit and the bubbling along the edges, and I've seen TG, albeit in pictures, cut smaller than the screen. Hopefully, one of these companies gets it right, though. Accessories are still being made for the device since it's still early in the game. We'll see what's out there as time goes on. I have a fair bit of time before I get the phone in the spring. Thanks for the heads-up! :)

I couldn't find an otter box so I went to amazon got a case and a Screen protector similar to invisible shield (all they have is the tempered glass don't want it) this is disappointing as all of my phones have had otter boxes and invisible shields I got relatively big hands so I don't mind the bulk

Oh and a 64 bit is a huge storage option!!! Yes android updates will be bigger but usually most are maintenance updates so expect an additional 5mb -15mb now the next is being android 6.x we won't know but I had a 64 GB phone and had multiple kit Kat Roms backed up on it so you should be good for at least 3 years

There's no doubt that by springtime there will be better cases available - both improved versions of current releases, and new entries by some that are a little slower to launch (personally waiting to see what Carved and Portenzo put out!).

As to tempered glass screen protectors, I'm hopeful, but would be surprised to see, that someone comes out with one offering true edge-to-edge coverage. The challenge is in economically manufacturing them to match the curvature at the edges of the screen, since they can't simply stamp them out of a single sheet. As it stands, there are a couple of options I've tried that, provided you don't mind a small border on the edge (which actually isn't a big deal at all if you're using a case), do a very good job with almost no edge lift at all.

Good comparison of the two protectors. I'm actually impressed by both, but most especially the Bodyguardz TG. The cutouts seem to be precise, and the lack of much glare and fingerprint resistance is intruiging. It would definitely work with a case on it.

Speaking of which, I love the look of Carved! They're quite unique. I love the textured look of the wood; quite artsy. They're definitely statement pieces, and on a Nexus 6, I'd say they'd make quite a statement.

I have accessory options bookmarked from a few places, so these will definitely be added, thanks!

Please share what accessories you have found for the N6. Might have found something the rest of us haven't seen yet.

Oh, just your standard searches conducted, really, on Amazon and the like. Keep in mind that I'm one who wants maximum drop protection from cases, so others might just want something with less protection and maximum aesthetics.

I'm considering an i-Blason Armorbox Dual Layer case, UAG, and a CASEFORMERS Duo Armor combo case (although I don't need a holster) through Amazon, as well as a Diztronic and a Verus Thor case.

I have requests put in at Ballistic (Tough Jacket), LifeProof, Trident (for either a Cyclops, or Kraken A.M.S. Series case; the Aegis is available... Aegis Case for Google Nexus 6) , and Seidio (for the Obex Series case).

I don't know if anyone's mentioned these on here, and there are only a couple reviews, but so far, so good... Nexus 6 Screen Protector - Jelly Comb Premium 9H Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Nexus 6 - Anti-scratch Oleophobic - Anti Shatter - 0.3mm Ultra Slim http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QN2X718...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU4140087

This one's currently unavailable... MobilePioneer Google Nexus 6 0.3mm Ultra Thin 9H Hardness 2.5D Round Edge Tempered Glass LCD HD Premium Screen Protector - Anti-Scratch/ Shatterproof/ Anti-Fingerprint/ Water & Oil Resistant (Nexus 6) http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ORW5ZWA...ag=hawk-future-20&ascsubtag=UUacUvbUpU4140087

It's still early, though, so things can change in the months ahead.

Theoretically speaking, how many annual updates might the 64 GB Nexus 6 be able to handle, given the amount of storage? Basically, I want to get opinions as to how many years of use one can realistically expect out of this device. Is there a sort of shelf life that can be applied to the Nexus 6?

Updates don't take up that much space. So what you start the device with is usually what the devices updates take storage wise. The shelf life has more to do with how long google will support more than storage space. You will be fine with 64 of storage in updates perspective.

Thanks for sharing your research on accessories. As far as TGSPs go, the one that Jeremy 8000 mentioned above is a strong contender. I have also been watching a thread on XDA about TGSPs. It mentions some of the ones you've mentioned as well. There's a lot of hands-on experience with various TGSPs represented in that thread, so I keep my eye on it.

You're welcome. Yeah, I've been checking out the opinions on XDA, too. I agree, the TG mentioned above is a contender. There's also one from iloome, which was recommended by Erica Griffin in one of her videos.
