how much better is dual core?

I really don't know much about dual core all I know is that everyone says its better but how much better. I wanna get the thunderbolt because I really like HTC but I'm just wondering what's the biggest differences between the HTC thunderbolt and dual core?

Well until Honeycomb, there won't be much difference, since Froyo and Gingerbread aren't written to take advantage of dual core hardware (and there's no telling when the recently announced group of devices will get honeycomb).

I still maintain that there will probably be at least a couple months between the release of the Dolt and the release of Dual Core devices, as well.

Bottom line is, we don't really know. Even on Honeycomb. It's all speculation at this point. We've never had any dual-core phones and we won't know how much of an improvement they really are until we get them.

It is like buying a laptop. You can get a crazy good processor, that will stand out with certain software, like tegrazone apps designed only for duel core tegra chips, or you can get a 1Ghz phone that will be plenty good, and run just fine. The biggest difference is performance, however, both chips run current software just fine. The dual core essentially does twice the processes of a single core.

The only difference that is going to affect us at this point is 3D gaming and battery life. I think the TBolt is going to be just as fast if not faster for web surfing and running apps (More RAM, which means it gets to the screen faster. It doesn't matter how fast you are processing if you can't see it on the screen) Every thing I have read leads me to believe that we should have no problem clocking the TBolt to 1.2 with a custom kernel, maybe even faster. Just don't forget you charger...

Really? Where do you get those facts? The HD is only flash ROM, while the bionic is DDR2. Don't give incorrect info please. If I am wrong, please prove so, that way we get facts, not theories.

Well I have been thinking about either a droid bionic or a htc thunderbolt. AC just posted scores for droid bionic and i have also have seen quadrant scores for the thunderbolt and seems to me the thunderbolt is only about 200-300 points behind. Seems negligible to me. Could be though that quadrant doesn't take advantage of dual core yet.

Johnly... I was unaware of the whole "DDR2" thingy. Just got off of Wikipedia and you seem to make a great point. I stand corrected...

No problem. Thanks for being upstanding. Allot of people think it is flash only. Thanks again. The HTC is no slow poke.

As for as I've heard dual core phones should be better than what we are using right now.

I also didn't know it was flash ROM and not flash RAM, I wonder if they needed DDR to to keep up with the dual core or if that is just a new design path for Moto.

DDR2 folks DDR2, as DDR is NOT DDR2,
The key difference between DDR and DDR2 is that for DDR2 the memory cells are clocked at 1 quarter (rather than half) the rate of the bus. This requires a 4-bit-deep prefetch queue, but, without changing the memory cells themselves, DDR2 can effectively operate at twice the bus speed of DDR.

Common smartphone task probably won't reveal much of a discrepancy between the 2 devices. Not even for gaming, because there currently aren't any games available for the Android platform that need that type of power to run smoothly.

As of now, the only real advantages I can think of is its ability to drive a higher resolution display than WVGA, and output 1080p video. In theory, it should also be more energy efficient since dual cores get more work done with less effort than their single core counterparts.

I really think I am skipping the first go round of dual core processors, by CES 2012 we will have it on all Android devices and the Ice Cream or Honeycomb will be available and fully supporting the dual core's. I guess I just want ThunderBolt after all. Call me crazy (some do) but I feel HTC is the safer bet.

Another thing to note is that DDR memory will use more milliamps so therefore less battery life and the fact that nothing till honeycomb will allow that Dualcore to use both processors efficiently then the one working will use the amount of juice similar to the Dolt. So basiclly untill honeycomb is formatted with motoblur on top and verizon tweaked you'll have a battery killer on your hand, My guess a long enough wait since VZW is notorious for holding back OTA's.

i actually just read an article yesterday that said out of the top 4 major carriers verizon was 1st for updating phones, followed by sprint, t-mobile, and at&t was last. i think this was just for android phones (i'll have to find a link) HTC was the top manufacturer to update...

Here's the article:

Report exposes which carriers and manufacturers upgrade Android phones the fastest | PhoneDog

Verizon is tops over Sprint. And HTC tops for manufacturer over Motorola (by a large margin).

Wow no kidding ! Lol it sure dont seem like it from my point, it def feels like
an eternity, then it seems like its close only to be pushed back. But facts dont lie. Kinda like Mondays and Fridays seem to last longer when eight hours is still eight hours.
