How much do the V30 Display Issues worry you about the Pixel XL 2?

Some of the V30 review units apparently have display issues. Ron Amadeo of artstechnica.com https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/lg-v30-hands-on-lgs-oled-displays-still-have-quality-issues/ states that the following as examples:

"In low brightness in a dark room, the screen is grainy and has "dirty" looking horizontal banding all over it. The light level is also woefully uneven, with hotspots blazing out of the left and right corners."

"Notice how the Galaxy S8 produces a smooth, consistent color from the top of the display to the bottom. The LG V30 is supposed to be displaying a solid color, but it's so uneven that it starts out dark grey at the top and transitions to a light grey at the bottom. There's also lots of horizontal lines present in the LG display that aren't in the Samsung. It just looks so much worse."

So, there's some hope that these issues can be chalked up to pre-production hardware & software. And there is hope that this isn't the same panel that's going on the XL.

On the other hand, some other reviews state that it looks great... so what do we do with that info?

Well, I'm reserving judgement until prod versions are seen. But I've learned to take alarmist worries with a bit of a grain of salt, especially when it comes to displays. I remember when I got my Nexus 6, there were quite a few howling over how horrible the display was... I had it, used it for a year.... never once did I fret about the display's quality.

Perhaps the LG's take on OLED does behave like the pic above... but it might also just really show itself if you are looking at a solid gray background in a dark room. To which I am not all that worried. It's similar to the people who freak out over a little bit of pixel degradation that you can only see, barely, if you slap a solid gray background like this and go peeping for the slightest bit of variation.... in operation, though, it's nowhere to be seen.

More than a little. I rather like the XL with sRGB turned on. Accurate colors, deep blacks and looks great.

Good points.

Considering their history, it has me a little concerned. Honestly though, if they're not great, it'll make my life easier. I really don't need a new phone, just kinda want one lol.

I do agree that this might only occur in specific situations, but when your main competitor does not have this same issue that's not a good look.

It could also be that the Pixel 2/XL2 use the same tech, but not the same exact panel. It will be interesting to see if this is just a manufacturing issue and how much it varies from device to device.....which is also concerning....

Let's wait and see how the production models are and if any software tweaking can fix the problems too. Let's remember the other phone in that picture used as a comparison had heaps of complaints about the red tinted display etc when it launched

The date for Oreo support is a bigger concern. At least with the screen issue, you can check it out of the box and return / exchange it if it isn't up to par.

The Pixel 2 will have O.

Whoops, I was referring to the V30 and 'O', not the Pixel2 of course. I'm really liking Oreo on my 5x. As interesting as the V30 is, I think this is really going to come down to Pixel 1 vs Pixel 2 for me.

I'm very concerned. Mostly because another website also reported the same screen uniformity issue and LG televisions also have this exact same problem, which means that it is likely that this issue will be common on any device with an LG OLED display. It is very disappointing because there aren't any phones I am really wanting at the moment that can work with Verizon. The Pixel XL 2 was basically my last hope. This hasn't been a great year for phones. The phone I wanted the most was the Essential PH-1, but that ended up being a flop -- at least at release.

What's the issue with the Ph1?

Meh. I am not overly concerned yet. It all depends on if the problem is actually noticeable in my day to day use. The very dark, low brightness, grey screen is not something I plan to be looking at often, for example :-).

If this is an issue, and if it cannot even be discerned to me when doing "normal" stuff. (using my normal apps, etc), then it is not an issue at all for me.

Yes this is a very good point and commonly missed. If we can't tell an issue exists, does it matter?

I think once you see it, you won't be able to unsee it and it will drive you crazy.

We'll see. IF .. there even is an issue at all on the Pixel XL 2 screen, I'm not gonna go looking for problems. If I notice it in my normal use of the phone, then it would be an issue. If not, no.

I'm not concerned at all for now.

The issue is highly likely to affect the Pixel phones. Like I said, literally all LG OLEDs have been affected by it so far.
