how much room should I leave on my phones storage?

Didn't know where to post this. But here we go.

I notice on windows around 8gb left the icon for my phone goes red.

I believe that indicates the room on my phone is running near full. But can I let my phone function properly while still adding files (music)? Right now I'm at 5.82gb left. And I'd love to add more but I don't want my phone to struggle, or not function perfectly.

Any insight on this anyone? Thanks

About 500MB. Windows doesn't know how much storage any particular operating system on a phone needs free, it just knows at what percentage free on any storage device it should turn red. If you could run the phone with no free storage, Windows would still turn red at the same point.
