How much storage do I need?

Hi everyone,

I have my EVO pre-ordered and was wondering how much storage you all recommend for the EVO? I heard the included MicroSD 8gb card was class 2. I am going to pick up a class6 card but I am debating between 8gb and 16gb (I haven't seen any 32gb on the market at all.)

I know much of this is dependent on use but being new to the android platform I have nothing to base it on. I have been using an original Pre and I have a ton of apps but haven't filled it. I have 3.2gb free (of 8 internal). I do not use my phone for music or movies (All is streamed or stored on ipod). I need storage for various android apps, games, podcasts, etc.

What is everyone's thoughts?

I'm gonna start with 8gb. I have the original pre as well and i have a bunch of apps and 3gb of music, plus various videos, images, etc. But, much more apps for android so I'm guessing I'll need more in no time.

If you are not going to put anything but apps on your phone... android apps are very small so 8GBs will be more than enough, also I wouldn't worry about getting a different card till Froyo comes out for the EVO because you won't be able to take advantage of the faster card till then and they'll be cheaper by then.

I thought all that Froyo changed was the ability to install apps on external storage. I was under the impression that many apps installed on system memory but used the SD card for downloaded data like a GPS app would store the launcher on system memory but the maps on an SD card etc. Wouldn't I see the speed increase on these apps?

^but isn't the difference between class 2 and class 6 for the evo non existant?

I don't believe Sprint Nav. or Google Maps stores any map data locally on the phone, an internet connection is required and the maps are downloaded on-the-fly as you are driving. When I lose my network connection my maps will not update.

google maps cache's the route... so you still get directions during a phone call.

That depends on how long you are on the call cause it'll only cache so much. I've had end phone calls before so my map can update... it's a pain and I can't wait till we get 4G around here. Also this cached data probably sits in RAM and I doubt the speed of the SD card would make a difference anyway.

That is a class 2 (slow in speed) card. From what I can tell, we are talking about ~20-25 for a 8gb class6 or 50-60 for class6 16gb

I bought the Class 2 16GB card and slapped it into my Hero until I pick up my EVO tomorrow. Honestly, while I took a few extra minutes to copy over my 7GB MP3/podcast collection, there is no noticeable difference in performance in play back or reading/writing from the user end.

Honestly, get what will work best for the application, not what works best period. There's not really a need to stick a Porche engine in a Yugo if the car performs very well at that slower speed. (Not that I'm calling the EVO a Yugo ;p).

Bottom line is... if you wanna drop $70 or $80 on a class 6 card and you have that money left on your bed after swimming in your pools of cash from the night before, than by all means. :) However, if you're going to load up your MP3 collection, then add a an album's worth of song every week or two, the Class 2 performs just fine and, for under $30, it's the way to go for someone who's looking to operate on the cheap.

I guess I'm not sure. I read in a review about the one coming with the phone only being class 2 and recommending a faster card. I am new to android so I'm not sure what it supports or the Evo. Does anyone know? If it doesn't I think I will just stick with the stock 8gb and see how it goes buying a larger one later.

Oh, and as for the original question of how much storage do you need...

My EVO is replacing my 8GB iPod touch... I had 7GB worth of music, podcasts and video on it, so the 16GB card was a no-brainer. If you're not using it for music, you're probably fine with the 8GB.

Thanks, I would need much larger if I had my music on it as well :) I like to have my entire collection with me and that means carrying my 160gb ipod classic around :-p

Yeah I think you're better off waiting if you're not going to fill it up right away. I would wait and read some reviews on the EVO with faster SD cards, and especially when Froyo comes out, before getting one.

I got the this card Newegg.com - A-DATA 16GB Micro SDHC Flash Card Model MicroSDHC CL6 16G Card because I know I'm going to throw a lot of movies on it right away... And I got it basically free through my work

I'm definitely going with the 16 gigger..

I figure I'll throw on ~150 of the songs I can't live without and a couple of 720p movies to show off the screen to some of my friends when they ask about my phone. I'm thinking Star Trek and Avatar would be good candidates to show it off.. great visuals in both films.
