How much to design your own case line?

This is something I've thought about for awhile now. I currently own a kiosk and sell phone accessories but it's a very rough business.

So I was wondering what would be the cost to design my own case line? I mean like you see with the brand name ones that are not sold in stores like Supcase and Poetic. What would be the cost to design a case, get a scientist to test materials, drop ratings and finally production cost to have it made in China?

I know a patent could cost 40k. I mean even if I could just sell it on Amazon and on my website like companies like Poetic and Youmaker, Supcase do. I don't really mean like Best Buy and the phone stores. That would take years to build a business like that.

I'm a big case guy. I want to design heavy duty cases that fit my specifications. It's hard finding rugged cases other than Otterbox for Samsung phones.

Hi, where are you from? From what ive heard. You need to design the case. Make the molding. Then you get engineers to test it... Or sort of like that.

I don't have machines to do that. I'm in the United States, Florida. Most of these cases you see, the secondary brand name ones sold on Amazon like Poetic, Armadillotek, Supcase are just that. Molded plastic, not fancy materials.

Funny about Supcase is I've seen unbranded Unicorn Beetle pro cases on Alibaba and it was called Unicorn Beetle exact design so it didn't look generic since they used their name but didn't have their brand stamped on it like when you buy it on Amazon.

I would imagine that most phone case makers don't use phone case sales as their only source of income. They have the rubber/plastic molding machines in house for a wide variety of products that require moldings. Plus, I'm not sure how many of those overseas companies hire scientists to check out their product. They probably source their plastics from other dealers who have already passed some sort of inspection. To start from the ground up as solely a phone case maker probably would not be a very lucrative idea. A more logical approach, imo, would be to approach some of the case makers you see on Alibaba and sites like that with a design, have them manufacture it for you in bulk, and ship it for you to sell.

Yea, that's what I mean. Those Chinese manufactures you see selling generic cases. They can even stamp your name on it too I think. Not a bad idea. Come up with a case design and then have them make it and then have it put in packaging. Like I said I see Supcase sold on Alibaba without the Supcase branding on it but it's called Unicorn Beetle still. I almost wonder if that's what Supcase does. They just have the design and they have a factory over there pump out the cases.
