How neurotic do I need to be able killing apps?

I've only had my phone for a few days and love it. I have the app killer installed and every time I open it it amazes me how many apps have somehow opened in the background and I feel the need to keep closing them. Just how much of a difference does it make on battery life having things like FoxNews app, voice commands, etc running in the background. Do I need to keep being neurotic or is it not that huge of a deal/battery drain in the end?

Truth. Either uninstall them or leave them be. The thing is that all the time you aren't looking/killing, they are running anyway. The only way to effectively kill them is to let the task killer do so automagically, and this leads to huge problems. Ask yourself how much more effective the fox news app is than, say, subscribing to their twitter feed. I have not found a news app that is a useful replacement for just subscribing and checking new tweets every few hours.

Did you install the task killer or did the Verizon rep do it? Truely, just uninstall it. Android will kill processes as it needs to when those apps are not in use. The apps you may see running, such as WeatherBug, or My Reminders, stay in memory because they will send alerts (notifications) when needed.

Yea, the Verizon rep did it before he even handed me the phone. Gave me the impression that I need to go crazy killing apps

For those of us that are not rooted, I don't see a problem with killing certain apps at startup. Apps that you'll never, ever use and don't auto-open every time you get a phone call/whatever. Apps like 3G Mobile Hotspot and VZNavigator are apps that auto-open when you turn on the phone and are apps that I will never use and don't auto-open much if ever. Apps like CityID and Skype are apps I never use but they auto-open everytime I use the phone so no point killing them.

There is an app called Startup Killer that does just this. I had ATK on my phone (actually still do just almost never use it) and never had any problems with it, phone ran fine with it but I never had it auto-kill anything, always manual. Battery life was about the same either way. I just didn't like the 'dog-chasing-its-tail' feeling.

Startup Killer is a task killer like ATK. It runs itself at start up (like ATK can), then just kills the processes you selected. Those apps/processes will eventually start up again. You can't turn a service on/off like you can in Windows, but you can kill them. Because it's a service though Android will eventually do it's own audit and start those services again.

Go back to the store, talk to the manager, tell them to stop installing software on your phone. Who knows what else they put on there without you knowing. Call the 1-800 number and complain as well. The majority of Verizon reps are clueless and have no idea about the products they sell.

Go back to the store, talk to the manager, tell them to stop installing software on your phone. Who knows what else they put on there without you knowing. Call the 1-800 number and complain as well. The majority of Verizon reps are clueless and have no idea about the products they sell.

Sort of like the high quality doesn't even cover the entire screen screen protector he sold me that I promptly returned after getting home and looking at it. Or I guess, that is just a sales tactic like the charger, cradle, headset, etc he tried to sell me.
