How often should we reboot/restart our Incredible??

So i was thinking the other day, i never turn off my phone unless i really have to (i.e. software update restart). Is this bad or does this matter at all? I know some users prefer to turn their phone off at night or at other times but my phone literally never gets powered down unless, like i said, it really has to.

What is everyone's thoughts and opinions on this?

Should your phone be rebooted every once in a while or does it matter?

Should occasional battery pulls be done?

What are the pros and cons if any with regularly rebooting our phones?

I figured this thread could be used to discussed these different things and what everyone thinks. What do you guys think?

I reboot daily...because that's part of the process of getting the battery to charge to full capacity.

I just got the 1750 mAh battery. I can't wait to get it charged and conditioned and see what kind of service I get then.

It's probably been posted in this thread already, but make sure the following is unchecked:

Settings > Applications > Development > Stay awake

Hm, that was already unchecked...and I had rebooted it. So far this morning the Up and Awake times are on par with my actual use of the phone...(i.e., mostly the Up has been increasing).

This whole up time/awake time thing is giving me flashbacks to the "what is your bootup memory??" debates at crackberry...

I really hope I don't have to monitor this crap.

Quickpull for Android anyone??

Interesting thread to read. I tend to do a reset when an app messes things up (once every 4-5 days (maybe)).

One thing I have seen mentioned but no definitive answer (at least that I saw) that I am curious about are the sutomatic resets the Incredible does. Is this a standard Android thing or is it indicating there may be an issue?

Just curious....thanks!!

NO, you won't have to pull the battery on DI - it's not a BB.

You wrote, "So far this morning the Up and Awake times are on par with my actual use of the phone..." Sounds like you fixed the problem. Check it occassionally if you want to but if the phone is functioning okay and you re-boot every once in awhile you should be good to go.

Powering down and back up=Reboot // There is no need to pull the battery!

I power down everyday as I rotate batteries (I have two), and have only 2 forced closes so far (have had the phone for a month).

With my Moto Droid, it would randomly reboot whenever I was listening to music - either the MP3's on the phone, Pandora, or Last.fm. It was frustrating...

Everyone

Hey guys i updated the first post with some cliffnotes and an update on what has been going on in this thread, important key points and all.

ATTENTION
If you see that i missed something important or you have something pertaining to my cliffnotes update section pleeease private message me and i will change it. The only reason i ask that is so we dont clutter up the thread with lots of side conversations that might not be important.

This will benefit first time readers of this thread trying to get though all of the information.

*Hi Five* :)

Do you have advanced task killer installed? I experienced this problem as well. UNINSTALL THAT APP if you have it. haha :) if you dont then maybe someone else could offer up a possible solution

ATK Question

to the OP -

I am really green to the DROID having just picked up the Incredible earlier this week. I am under the impression ATK is a necessity as it will kill the apps you don't want running in the background. I also thought with a ton of apps running, without a certain way to cease their function, it would drain the battery and sludge the performance of the phone. But in reading your post, you are saying it isn't the case, and is in fact the opposite? If so, how then do you "kill" your apps when you are finished with them?

Don't worry about killing the apps and let the Android system manage them for you it won't let your phone slow down. Your phone will run much better if you just get rid of ATK and let the phone do the work.

I reboot daily, but that is only because I shut down to charge at nite. The charge seems to last alot longer as compared to charging with the phone on. Rebooting is not neessary on these phones. Some people just can't let old BB habits die.

this post pretty much sums it up....
The problem is people think that closing whatever is showing will only affect that killed app, which may or may not be correct. People tend to kill everything that they used before but aren't currently using. This can affect the phone's functionality and any apps that were previously connected to it. Just because an app is cached does not mean its running cpu cycles so it does not affect processing power/battery life much, if at all. Google devs have even came out and said directly that a task killer is not necessary, and that people like it for their own sake of mind (Placebo effect). Here is a simple read about why task killers are not needed: FAQ: Why You Shouldn?t Be Using a Task Killer with Android ? Geek For Me ? Android CDMA Sprint Hero

If you would like a full explanation, I can also find the thread on Androidforums that has much more indepth details and alot of converts.

What he said ^^^

I have never rebooted after installing or removing an app and have seen no problems. What benefits are you see from doing that?

I've only done it maybe once and definitely dont stand by anything saying its absolutely necessary but I have had an instance with one of the apps where i ran it right after install and it was acting weird or it force closed so i rebooted my phone and then after that it started up fine. Maybe if you're heavily multitasking like i was, things can get confused. I think i was texting 2-3 people at a time, using touiteur for twitter, listening to music, and browsing the internet simultaneously haha. Taking all that into account i decided that a reboot couldn't hurt haha.
