How the heck do I set up voice mail?

I'm surprised there was no instruction given to me by google or even my carrier. I have a Pixel 2XL that is a verizon version, but I have it on my AT&T carrier.

All I know is holding down "1" goes to the voicemail box(and pressing # after?) and that's it. But I don't know where to go from there to set it up.

Anyone know how?

I don't have a 2XL (yet) but on my S7 I use Google Voice and followed the instructions to setup voicemail.. I hated Verizon or other carrier voicemails.

that app isn't woring.

Why is all of this such a pain? My older phone Nokia Lumia 1020 wasn't hard to set up, and I could hear voice mails for each person who called me under the call tab. I hope I don't have to call voice mail every time too

Call At&t and they will do it for you.

I also just use Google voice but At&t app is fine.

How does Google Voice work? Looking at it through the app store and it says it gives me a "free phone number and cheap rates!" I don't want an extra number.. and I don't want to be charged either for managing my voice mail..

Having a google account you can also get a Google #. It is nice because you can also have that # auto-forward to your normal cell #. The advantage is when you sign up for stuff like credit cards, etc. you can give your google voice # so they don't have your personal cell #. There is no charge for this. When you setup google voice there is an integration option so you can use your normal cell number instead of the google voice one. Anyway, i have been using this for awhile now because Verizon VM wanted to limit me to only 10 or so voicemails at a time which was complete garbage so i looked for other options and came across this. Again i have never been charged for a thing. It might be giving you the generic warning of data rates apply, etc.

Just got on the phone with at&t. I was on the phone with them for an hour in circles, and I couldn't get anywhere with them. In the end I needed my phone owner's pass code(I'm not the authorized one, that's my brother)). How is so unnecessarily ******* uncomplicated to set up voice mail here? **** I'm surprised the at&t store didn't do it for me when I swapped phones and sim scards.

And I just tried Google voice. It can't help if you don't have a voice mail set up with at&t already. And its ridiculous to think one has to use a band aid, another app to use voicemail. This shouldn't be be so complicated. I'm gonna have to go to a store at this point, hopefully without my brother.

It is such a pain because AT&T makes it a pain. They could have it work but they aren't too friendly w/ their services to unlocked devices.

You said the app itself isn't working for you?

I downloaded the app and got a number. Not sure where i go from there. If someone calls me and tries to leave me a message, will it go through my original number first and have it forward to the new number I got from google to leave a voice mail?

Oh I meant the official AT&T app. I don't mess with GV for my voicemail. Others may know.

I downloaded the visual voicemail ap the other day but deleted it. I can't get access as I am not the owner of the plan. I'd have to ask my brother
