Im wrong! Doesnt happen very often....

But here is the scoop....

If you had S-OFF before the HTC Dev method you can flash custom kernels just fine.

If you took the OTA before you did S-OFF you are hosed, you an only flash the OS.

I hope that clarifies. I took the OTA and tested it. I dont have the testicular fortitude to go back to S-ON to test the research I have done but I believe it to be accurate at this time.

UPDATE: I have confirmed that even with S-ON you can now flash overclocking kernels (For the proper OS version)!

So to clarify, if you use the HTC Unlock method you can indeed flash any ROM and kernel you choose. S-ON / S-OFF is no longer relevant!

Hmmm... When I go into "Recovery", it immediately goes blank, save for a medium sized icon of my phone, and on top of that is a red exclamation point inside a red triangle.

What's that about??

And apparently I can't. :'( It says my device (the Sprint HTC EVO 3D) is not supported because it has HBOOT version 1.50.0000.

Will my HBOOT version be supported in a future release of Recovery??

Can I at least get temp-root without recovery? I am really having a tough time figuring this out.

All I really want is WiFi tethering, for which I need at least temp-root.

Ok....I am running the stock rom, I have S-OFF and am currently rooted.I wanted to update the OTA from "1.13.651.7"(hboot 1.40) to "2.08.651.2"(hboot 1.50)

I have installed several apps that require root to run..I have frozen the bloatware and have now unfroze them to install the update. I haven't installed any stock apps.....Is there anything else that has to be back to Stock other than what I am gonna list below?

My understanding is that I must place the "Original" recovery file in the root of my SD? PC36IMG.zip? is there only one (Factory/Stock) "Revcovery File"for the EVO 3D?? I tried using "Clockworkmod" to install the OTA 2.08.651.2 manually from the SD card and it "Failed" I also just went a head and download it directly and let it install on it's own but when the phone rebooted black screen came up with the "Android Mascotte and an exclamation mark" I guess indicating that it failed that way too!

Is this because I didn't have the "Factory/Stock" recovery file installed? If that's the case, where do I download the original so I can put it in the root of the SD card?

Last question.......Now, Let's say I have now flashed the new OTA 2.08.651.2 update...I understand I am gonna loose root....What file do I need to Flash/restore the "ROOT" to the new "HBOOT 1.50 - 2.08.651.2"??? Or is there not a crack for it yet!! and remember.....I am S-OFF............Thanks a quadrillion times over!!!!

Usually PC36IMG.zip are flashed in Hboot,you have to power down and hold i think volume down plus power till white screens with androids at bottom pop up then it should start to scan for the img file that's on sdcard and flashes it that way.
I understand your s-off but to gain root and flash custom recovery just seems like the long way to go. If you want the latest update,i would just flash any of the custom roms posted here or you can go here [ROM] --- Stock Rooted 2.08.651.2 Odexed & De-Odexed (8/20/11) --- - xda-developers
and download a version of the latest update that is completely stock with root already in it for you. THe odex version would be exactly like stock,the deodex version is for be able to flash themes and other goodies.

Really?? That seems too easy!! Lol...... I thought u had to do the update and use one of the deodexed files to gain root back or something.....so, all I do is just boot into recovery and flash either the odexed or deodexed? I understand the deodexed is more Customizeable, but its ok to install it for now isn't it? Incase I wanna do something more with it? Thanks dude!

Secondly, IF I cannot do updates, how do I get rid of the software update notification that shows up in my notifications?

It is highly recommended not to take any updates. Usually when an update rolls out you can check this forum and one of the resident badasses will post whether or not is ok to take. Never take an update without getting the all clear from someone smarter than you.
To get rid of the notification go to the system update settings and uncheck the check for updates automatically box. Or install a custom ROM, most devs remove the ability to check for updates from the ROM.

You will have to click on the notification like ur gonna install it, but cancel it and it will go away from ur task bar....

Hey, just so u guys know, I received a new EVO 3D as an upgrade and of course I checked it and it was new....I received the Phone 9-7-11 and it was still HBOOT 1.40 !!!!

Reazon 1 I've chosen not to root. Id rather get updates from pros than hacks. Never know. You may be rooted but can't get a critical firmware update.

Wow! The "pros" would be the the ones that created the software that needed a "critical " update.
Second, we still get the updates, usually before it is rolled out to everyone. Our "hacks" take the time to clean up and remove the crap that the "pros " add in to slow down our phones. Over the course of 4 android phones I have yet to get an update from a carrier that the "hacks" didn't make better.
