How to access a USB drive with the USB adapter

Bought Samsung tab2 P3100 few days back. Not able to connect my hard disk to it and everytime I connect it always displays high power device connected as a warning message.
Same issue happens when I connect my reliance data card to it.Is there anyway I can connect these devices to my tab? Please help.

I started another thread because I didn't see this one. I've now figured out 99% of my problem was I was looking for USBdrive instead of extStorage, which shows up in all my file handlers, including Ghost Commander. But I still have one other question.

If I'm playing music or watching movies from a thumb drive, that drains the battery, without a way to recharge while in use. If I'm streaming from online, I can plug in the Tab and recharge while I'm using it. So, I'm wondering if using a "Y" adaptor in the USB plug would allow charging (either from an A/C plug or from a USB connection to a PC) on one leg while playing media off a USB stick. Would that work? Could it damage either the Tab or the USB drive?
