How to back up apps to SD card

I was wondering if there was a way to save all your apps to the sd card to free up memory on the phone. Like instead of having all my apps installed on the phone, have them installed on the SD card so that the phone operates faster. I have no idea if this is possible or even beneficial.

Go to Settings-> Applications->Manage Applications-> pick an app and you should be able to store on SD.

You should be using Froyo to do this.

Your phone will infact run slower, internal storage and ram memory are different things so if the thought process is if you have less on the phone you have more memory to run faster this is not so.

also if you move your apps to the sdcard the apps respond more slowly and if the app has a widget attached to it , it wont work. This feature is pointless to me. unless you have a phone with no internal storage this is not needed. Most phones have at least 2 gigs of memory .

lets put it this way my largest app is 2.94mb large, this is by far the largest app i have.

so if the largest app i have is 2.94mb divided by 2gigs = 697 so i could fit approx 700 of my largest app. and if that internal storage was filled i would still have the same amount of working ram

If your internal memory is jammed, it can in fact affect write speeds, so moving some apps to the SD card is not a bad idea... The easiest method I've found is App2SD or Titanium... Titanium works well because you can move apps in a batch instead of having to click one at a time, as with the other program... some apps cannot be moved, however... I personally have not noticed any lag whatsoever comparing apps running internally vs off the SD... when an app is moved to SD, part of it still resides internally, so not sure I'm buying the lag thing...

Is moving apps to the SD card an effective way of transfering them to a new phone?

If I get a new Epic can I copy the apps from my current phone to the SD card and then copy them from the SD card and onto the new phone? Would this preserve my settings, data, etc?

Don't know why you want to move all apps to the card. You have almost 500 megs of internal memory available after a factory reset. Basic rule of thumb with these smart phones is, if the app uses the phone, clock or internet, keep the app in device memory.

Use an app like Quick App Clean Cache to clear the cache of your apps. Apps like the Market and Browser will build up a huge cache.....

+1 on this. I completely agree. Ever since I started running leaked DK28 Froyo back months ago we have had access to App2SD and I have never used it once. If the application installs itself there great, otherwise the phone has plenty of onboard RAM to storage dozens and dozens of apps.

It's hard to believe things could have changed this much in 10 months. To be clear, my HTC EVO 4G on Sprint has only 500MB of internal storage plus it shipped with an 8GB SD card. :-[

The largest apps on my phone (NOT on my SD card) are Acrobat Reader 12.85MB, Amazon App Store 7.5MB, Facebook for Android 12.42MB, HandCent SMS/MMS 8.22MB, Lookout 4.51MB, Android Market 9.09MB, Swiftkey X 7.68MB, Voice Search 4.58MB and YouTube 3.52MB. After cleaning all the cache and data possible on the apps that I can't move to my SD card, I've used up 427.63MB and have only 101.97MB left.

I have 15 apps running on my phone plus the Sprint bloatware on which I've deleted all updates, cache and data as I don't use them. I know of no way to get dozens of apps on my phone without using my SD card wherever possible. I've had to uninstall some apps that will not run on my SD card. Soon, I'll be shopping for a larger SD card as my 8GB card now has only 3GB left on 22 apps. I'll probably go for a 16GB or 32GB Class 10 MicroSDHC card. :p

Before downloading, I now check with devs to confirm their apps will run on my SD card or I don't download the app unless it's extremely compelling. App devs and Sprint will have to start working together to make more apps run on SD cards. One of the top criteria for my next phone in 2013 will be the largest onboard storage possible plus an SD card slot. The old PC advice still holds true for smartphones - you can't have too much memory or storage.

Any suggestions for lighter weight replacements for any of the apps listed in the 2nd paragraph will be gratefully appreciated and eagerly considered. O:-)
