how to backup and restore..

Hey all, I've waited a while before I downloaded the new update that came out a week or two ago. I wanted to wait and see people thoughts in general about it. So far I've seen mostly good reviews of it.. I guess my main quetion is: after I install it is it recommended to do a factory restore? If yes, What is the best way to back everything up? I've got it sync'ed to gmail which will take care of contacts, but what about pictures, apps and SMS/MMS?

What else do I need to do to make it easier/faster to restore everything IF I even need to do it at all....
Pretty stupid questions I know. I've just not had to do it before and want to make sure I don't lose anything that was important.

If you're not saving your pictures to an SD card (and for that matter, even if you are) I recommend something like Cloud Drive: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.amazon.clouddrive.photos - 5GB free, and it automatically backs up your pictures/videos to the cloud. There are similar apps if you use Google Drive or Dropbox. And if you store your pictures/videos on the internal memory you can use the Kies software as the previous poster suggested. (Note: Kies doesn't backup pictures/videos stored on the SD card.)

Helium: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup allows you to backup your apps and app data to an SD card or the cloud (cloud capability requires the Premium version). The UI leaves something to be desired, and I've seen comments in the Google Play Store indicating that there were problems with some games. YMMV.

and SMS/MMS?

Helium does SMS, but the only tool I've seen that handles MMS is Kies, and it also does SMS.
